Kahutia Bowling Club held its Club Championship Junior Mixed Pairs today, with Karen Pinn (skip) and Rewi Castle taking on William Cooper (skip) and Karen Macpherson in a two-game championship contest.

With only two teams entered, both combinations had plenty to play for, and the match produced some excellent bowling, with Karen Pinn and Rewi Castle eventually proving too strong across the two games.

In the first game, Karen Pinn and Rewi Castle made an excellent start to the opening game, quickly finding their rhythm and putting pressure on their opponents.

The first set began with both teams trading shots, but Karen and Rewi began to establish control. They scored 1 on End 2, 2 on End 3, 3 on End 4 and 2 on End 5, building a strong position and finishing the opening set 6–3.

The second set saw Karen and Rewi continued to apply the pressure. William Cooper and Karen MacPherson managed to pick up 2 shots on the third end but Karen and Rewi responded strongly.

In the second set. Karen and Rewi scored 1 on the first end and second end before producing a massive 6-shot haul on the third end. They then finished the set strongly with 4 shots on fourth end, taking the second set 12 - 0. They did not have to play the fifth end as William and Karen MacPherson were not able to catch up.

It was a commanding performance, with the big six and four on the closing ends effectively putting the first game beyond doubt.

In the second Game, the second game followed a similar pattern, with Karen Pinn and Rewi Castle continuing their impressive form.

They again started positively, scoring 1 on the first end, 2 on the third end, 1 on the fourth end and another 1 on the fifth end, finishing the opening set 5–2.

William Cooper and Karen MacPherson fought hard in the second set and made an early statement by picking up 4 shots on the first end.

However, Karen and Rewi remained composed and responded immediately and produced 2 shots on the second end, followed by another 2 on third end and 1 on fourth end.

Karen Pinn and Rewi Castle then delivered the decisive blow on last end with a big 4 shots, taking the set 9–4. They won the tournament with two-lives still intact.

Across the two games, Karen Pinn and Rewi Castle demonstrated consistency, composure and the ability to produce big ends when it mattered most. This is only their second time playing together as a team.

For Rewi Castle, the victory is particularly special as it marks his first Club Championship Junior title at Kahutia Bowling Club.

Commiserations and well done to second year bowler, William Cooper, and Karen MacPherson who played so well together. They had some awesome bowls throughout the two games and never gave up till the end.

Congratulations to Karen Pinn and Rewi Castle, who now have the honour of representing Kahutia Bowling Club at the Centre Champion of Champions Junior Mixed Pairs.

A special thank you also goes to Tournament Controller Joe Wimutu, Greenkeeper Les Whittington, and helpers Puna McRoberts and Allan Parker for their work behind the scenes and for helping make the championship possible.

Kahutia Bowling Club officially opened its 2026–2027 season on Saturday, 29 August, with a great turnout of members and supporters despite the occasional spell of light rain.

The afternoon began with the traditional first bowl of the season, delivered by Tony Dobson. Tony was also honoured by the club for his valued contribution and the many ways he has supported Kahutia Bowling Club through his hard work and willingness to help with various projects and jobs around the club. His contribution is greatly appreciated by the members.

The opening day saw four rinks and 24 players (eight teams) competing in a Triples format, while other club members also came along to support and enjoy the day.

With good music playing in the background, there was a fantastic atmosphere on the green as everyone settled into three rounds of eight-end games.

Despite the weather, the smiles, laughter and friendly competition continued throughout the afternoon, with everyone making the most of the first day back on the greens.

After the bowls, members enjoyed a shared afternoon tea, with plenty of food, cold drinks and good conversation. It was a great opportunity for everyone to relax, socialise and catch up with fellow club members.
