It was a beautiful day in Feilding with the rain holding off and the field dry to allow for what would be an epic battle.

FAHS Colts were taking on Whanganui Collegiate 2ndXV, both teams had been performing well so far in the comp, so this was sure to be a great game.

The game started with both teams putting in some great defence with big hits coming from both teams, however with the wind behind them FAHS got the upper hand and pinned Whanganui in their 22, the pressure was applied by the solid forward runners before the ball was swung wide for Noah Rua to score in the corner, unfortunately the conversion was unsuccessful.

Whanganui restarted the game and again FAHS used the wind to try and keep Whanganui in their half, both teams continued to try and kick for territory until a missed kick from Whanganui allowed the Colts to create a counter attack and with some Fijian magic Saki Sauqaqa scores under the post with Iferemi Waqaniveitagavi successful adding the extra 2 points.

Whanganui restarted the game and through handling errors by FAHS and a couple of solid tackles by Whanganui - FAHS found themselves under pressure on their own line, Whanganui hammered the forward pack before sending it wide for a try in the corner - the conversion was unsuccessful.

With time ticking on in the first half FAHS found themselves on the attack again with a 5m penalty the tap was taken and blind side flanker Zac Webster went over to score right on the half,

Half time score 17 - 5 to FAHS Colts.

Start of the second half and with the wind behind them WCS hit back hard and scored 2 quick tries to bring the score to 17 - 15 with less than 10 minutes to run. Moment had swung and FAHS was struggling to retain the ball but with less than 5 mins on the clock Iferemi Waqaniveitagavi showed some great individual brilliance and scooted around the ruck to score under the post and successfully added the extra 2 points,

With full-time sounding FAHS Colts won the game 24 - 15.

The game was played in great spirits, and both teams should be proud of their efforts.

HOME GAME but AWAY
Yes, that is right we are having a Home Game Away this weekend as we host Francis Douglas Memorial College at Waverley's Dallison Park. Home of the Border Rugby Club.

We were due to play FDMC in Round 1 - but because of SANIX FDMC were happy to have the match time shifted and this date was the one that we came up. Normally this is a billet hosting fixture, but that is hard to do mid-week - so we settled on the match being held in Waverley.

Mid-week match of our STORM WEEK and the side will take a lot of heart out of how we played against Matamata College, but we know that FDMC are a very different proposition and we are going to have to be at our best again.

Kick-off is set for 12pm on Wednesday. The team would love to see you on the sidelines. For those that can't make it the match will be livestreamed on the MAORI+ YouTube Channel.

COUSINS TOGETHER
Yesterday was a very special day for the FAKAVA, NGATA and FAKAVA-GALLOWAY families in our match against Matamata College.

In this match - first cousins (LtoR) - Tevita, Kingston and Wairangi all played together for the first time, and each had their own milestones.

Tevita played his 50th match, Kingston his 30th (Cap Game) and Wairangi was making his debut.

Many NZ 1st XV sides are blessed with deep family connections and multi generations turning out for their Schools. It is a great feature of NZ Schools rugby.

There have been many sets of brothers and cousins play for the FAHS 1st XV. Something quite special about playing with family members that you have grown up alongside.

Well done boys.

The break for our side over the King’s Birthday Weekend was a good chance to refresh and take our lessons from our subpar performance the week before against St John’s Hamilton. The side was very lethargic in that match and so it was important that we needed to address that in our next match. Certainly, we had a better roster to pick from as players were back from injuries and also various maladies had been put to bed.

First time playing Matamata College that we can recollect – perhaps our good friend Mr Adam Julian might be able to back fill our knowledge – but it was certainly their first time visiting Feilding. Matamata are a very well supported state co-ed side and they arrived in a branded coach that has a large screen, a starlink connection and a working loo!! Unreal set up generously provided to them via a local company.

We have been very encouraging and supportive to the Matamata College management team to assist them in their first year in the CNI competition, so it was excellent to spend some quality time with them over a meal on Friday night to chew the fat and share some “war stories.”

On to the match – great day for Rugby and we wanted a lot out of our side to put their mark on the game. Team came out of the starters gate with some real venom and that front foot platform allowed half back Iosua Tyrell to snip in for two early tries. Matamata struck back with a fantastic kick chase by Oni Naitiqatabua who managed to snaffle and intercept and dive in for a try. This young lad is lethal. Team recomposed themselves and ran fast to score three more in the half.

Big changes made at halftime as we rolled the bench and let a fresh batch get stuck into the match. We had the wind at our back, and we made sure to keep them camped under the Wall of Legends for long spells. Trap them there and make it hurt. Tries came regularly and we snuffed out any of their chances. Vucago picked up a hattrick in the match and our 30th match cap man Kingston Ngata crashed over for a delicious meat pie as well.

We roll again on Wednesday. Storm Week.

FAHS 1st XV vs Matamata College 1st XV
FAHS 58 (Emosi Vucago 3, Iosua Tyrell 2, Jone Lecia, Austin Tunnicliffe, Endre Dickson, Kingston Ngata, Alfereti Raka tries; Fomai Viliamu 3, Tuharakia Wallace-Mcleod 1 conversions) MC 5 (Oni Naitiqatabua try) HT: 27-5 to FAHS.

A day to remember yesterday for our FAHS 1st XV Man of the Match Kingston Ngata in our Round 5 match against Matamata College as he was playing his cap game bringing up 30 games for the Red Blue and White.

Answering the call to provide some strong ball carrying meters Kingston delivered in that department and as part of a strong scrummaging unit provided in his primary role as well.

His strong burrowing try in the second half was a fitting final point to his all round game. The coaches asked for a big effort from 'Didi' today and that performance was one to bank. Outstanding Kingston.
