FAHS Sports Awards - Thursday 24th September.

Sportsmen of the Year & Supreme Winners: Lucas Goodman & Tevita Fakava – Rugby

One for the front row big grunt brotherhood club this one with both Lucas and Tevita being named as joint winners for the School's prestigious Sportsman and Supreme Winner.

Lucas and Tevita started at FAHS in 2022 as Year 9 students and have played their rugby together all the way through with the Under 14As, Colts and 1st XV sides. Both have racked up over 50 games for the 1st XV and with their earlier teams and the tournament sides that they have made, have played over 100 games together while representing FAHS.

Lucas and Tevita were selected for the NZ School's rugby side this year - will have more of that in a future post - Not only bringing their significant size and power but excellent technical aspects to their positions of ho**er and prop. Both have outstanding prospects in the game post FAHS and when the time is right we will be announcing those. Both young men are excellent to coach and learn quickly.

Oh a bit of break from the Rugger over the last couple of weeks. A few posts coming out on what has been happening in the last week of school and so far in the holidays. Sevens programme will be underway when the term resumes.

So any way. FAHS Sports Awards - Thursday 24th September first up.

The FAHS Boy's Rugby Sanix XV collected the Team of the Year.

The Sanix World Rugby Youth Tournament is a well-known prestigious tournament run by the Japanese Rugby Union for invited schools and would be the closest there is to a World Schools Championship. Running since 2000 many excellent rugby schools have attended the tournament and many future international players have attended over those years.

An extremely well-run tournament that brought together 16 Schools from Japan, England, Namibia, South Korea, Taiwan, Tonga, Samoa, Fiji and New Zealand for a 10-day tournament held at the Global Arena in the Fukuoka Prefecture. Teams are placed into pools and then advance through to semifinals and then finals based on their performances.

Kyoto Seisho HS - won 22-14
Higashi Fukuoka HS - won 17-14
Chien Kuo High School - won 24-0
Tenri High School - won 22-19
Rotorua BHS - lost 19-46

Our advancement to the tournament final was solid as we defeated the recently crowned Japanese High School Champions Higashi Fukuoka in our 2nd match and controlled the conditions better in the semi final against the excellent Tenri High School.

Unfortunately for us we ended up facing Rotorua BHS in the final and they turned up and played their best match of the tournament against us and came out deserved winners. It was a fantastic tournament to compete at.

It was an outstanding experience for the players and management to be part of and the team represented Feilding High School and the Manawatu District extremely well.

To finish second at this world recognised tournament was an excellent achievement for the FAHS Boys Sanix XV.

Today Dane Whale ( #1141) reaches the 100-match milestone for Whanganui rugby. A member of the 2010 FAHS 1st XV, Dane played alongside his brother Ben Whale ( #1140) that year and later gave back to the school as an assistant coach in 2018.

Rugby excellence runs deep in the family, with his father Kerry Whale also surpassing 100 games for Whanganui.

The widespread praise from former Whanganui players highlights the impact Dane has had on and off the field, with his 100-game milestone reflecting commitment, leadership, and significant contribution to the province over many seasons.

Jona Nareki ( #1194) is tearing up the NPC try scoring charts and has cracked the all-time Top 10. Born in Sigatoka, Fiji, on 27 December 1997, he moved with his family to Whanganui and attended Feilding High School in 2015 forming a potent combination with Vilimoni Koroi ( #1180). During that year, he was selected for the Hurricanes Under-18 development programme, highlighting his potential as one of the region’s top young players.

Nareki moved to Dunedin in 2016 and has progressed through the Otago rugby system, represented the New Zealand Under-20 team that won the 2017 World Rugby U20 Championship, and played for the All Blacks Sevens. He made his Super Rugby debut for the Highlanders in 2020 and has since become one of their most dangerous attacking players. His pace, footwork, and finishing ability have made him a key performer for both Otago and the Highlanders.

Yesterday morning Brad Shields bought in the Super Rugby Pacific Trophy to the school library for our community to come along and see it and have a yarn.

Hurricanes had an incredible season and winning the trophy in such style this year provided much joy to the Rugby group at School.

Days Boys vs Hostels final match of the FAHS Rugby season and for some their one and only chance to play on “The Dog Pound” and for a lot of the lads from both sides the last time playing in a FAHS side.

Lots of history with this match and one that drags out a big crowd of old boys from both Day and Hostels. Some fierce battles in the past are retold and reports of trench warfare and physical harms dealt out are probably highly embellished. Every year will say that it is not as tough as it once was – probably some truth to that – but for it to continue when we know similar matches at other schools have been taken away from the pupils does mean it is of special meaning to FAHS Rugby boys.

The two teams organise sponsorship and design their jerseys – thanks to the sponsors that come on board. Makes it special as the teams get to keep their jerseys and shorts at the end of the match.

To the match – field in great condition – crowd was in and Hostels were piped out by Paddy Coogan. Hostels had the wind first and raced out to a early lead as Anapu-Burke bullocked through. Big shots going in and Gary the Ref did his best to maintain order. Few Cards dished out. 2 more tries to Hostels and it was looking like a blowout. Days did manage to stem the scoring. 19-0 at HT.

Day Boys through Tunnicliffe roared back into the match in the second half – but the solitary Hostels try to Vucago under the posts and the jersey pulling that shanked Nagel’s certain Day Boys try were the key moments in the 2nd half.

Hostels claimed the shield.
