Otago University Debating Society Founded in June 1878, OUDS provides a forum for students of UoO to debate and discuss

Whether it's debating at the Business building, competing in national and international tournaments, drinking at local bars or attending BYOs, we can guarantee there's something for everyone at the society. Founded in June 1878, the Otago University Debating Society (OUDS) is the oldest student organisation at the University of Otago. We host regular events to promote debating at both the Universi

ty of Otago and schools in the Otago region, and compete at national and international tournaments. We cater to novice debaters and seasoned veterans alike, with plenty of opportunity to learn from some of the best debaters in New Zealand and to take part in a variety of debating events. As well as the chance to develop strong debating skills, OUDS also offers an extremely friendly environment in which you can get to know a variety of people and enjoy a wide range of social events.

OUDS’s second BYO is here, and this time we at ‘The Maharajas!’ ✨🍾

This BYO night is being hosted at the local restaurant ‘The Maharajas’ (735 King Street) starting at 7pm. BYO nights are a really awesome way to build new and existing connections over some delicious food and drinks. These nights are always bustling so come get amongst it! 🔥

As this is a BYO night, if you’re wanting to drink please bring your own bottle of wine. However there is no expectation to drink. 🥂

Food and corkage costs are not covered.

Last weekend, Otago Uni DebSoc attended the annual Joynt Scroll national debating competition! 🫶

Taking place at Waikato University, we sent a contingent of 3 teams, 2 trainees and 2 judges! 📣 The competition took place over three days, with two days of open rounds, followed by semis and finals on the last day! ⏰

Otago 1 finished within break contention, and just narrowly missed out on breaking away into semis! We also secured a top ten spot for Ethan Jackson and a 2nd= most promising speaker for Kieran Sturland! ✨

A huge thanks to everyone involved, and congratulations to all the teams and judges who broke! And to all of the new incredible NZUDC accredited judges!!!

Look forward to doing it all again in Wellington next year! As well as the upcoming officers cup in Wellington in semester 2! Make sure to be looking out for signups!
