Nau mai, haere mai,
I’m Rox - your current Pres. Some call me Roxanne or Roxy and depending how you address me, you may see a different version.
I was born into this club the youngest of the late Chris Grant whanau so it was inevitable that I was going to leave a footprint here somewhere.
I grew up playing football, back in that day with boys and then transitioned into senior women’s at the ripe age of 13. I learnt a lot in those years as women’s football was very different. Played on Sundays, most of the time hungover with a crate of beers on the sideline and was initiated by the Waihola slide which is where I became apart of the infamous Socca Focca’s - iykyk..
I quickly found out that if you have an opinion on how things should go, you will be recruited to help out and that’s how I found myself on the committee when I was 22.
Since then I have had a range of roles within the club - player, team manager, event coordinator, vice president and now the first female president of the club.
I’ve been lucky within these roles to have a managing stint with Southern United and been on Women in Leadership workshops with NZF meeting other like minded wāhine.
In between all that, I got married to the one and only Mr K and patiently he has stood by me through it all.
In the 3 years I’ve been president, it has been a real insight to football in a different lens. The things I used to complain about, I now understand in different perspectives.
My predecessors gave me the advice - your first year will be s**t, your second year you’ll get stuff done and your third year will be cruisy and the advice couldn’t be more true! Any sane person would have walked away in the first year but sticking to the vision, seeing changes happen and having a fantastic committee support makes the job that much easier and enjoyable - there have been many laughs and tears along the way!
Finishing my final year, I am so proud of everything achieved and truly believe the club is being left in a better place. We have hit many milestones and I know that the legacy of these will continue on.
I may be stepping down but this is a part of my whakapapa and I know I will be back someday in the near future .
I hope during my tenure I have inspired others to take that leap of faith;
Tūwhitia te hopo (feel the fear and do it anyway)
