COMMITTEE CORNER

Hey team! Although I know most faces around the club, for those that don’t know me, I am Sam!

I've floating around the place for many years now coming up through the junior and senior grades and now playing prem footy where I have been for the last few years!

I joined the committee 4 years ago and have taken the role of club captain the past 3.

What that means is handling all things kit, including nets, cones, strips, fields, etc. and deciding what we apply to our generous funding partners for!

I'm our resident builder, so often do all the odd jobs around the place.

My typical Saturday involves getting to the vale around 8.30am to set the grounds up with Mckenzie and Fletty, although a lot of this has already been done by life member Andrew Roberts before the sun has risen!

We then grab some breaky at the VG and are usually joined by different faces each week, getting to talk to different members each week is something we love. The rest of the morning entails sorting out last minute issues and ensuring everyone has what they need for their games. After playing the late game it would be very rare to not see me back at the club for speeches (where everyone playing should be!). The rubber arms then come out, which leads to a few beers at ours, the result being Riley Boylan sleeping on the couch!

Green Island to me is more than just a club, it’s like a second family, join us for breakfast next time you're around on Saturday morning!

“A proud and meaningful occasion saw two wāhine Māori come together to present a football shirt to a female football club president. The presentation celebrated the achievement of a talented young Māori player who has earned selection for the U16 Whanapoikiri Pounamu team travelling to New Caledonia later this year”. – Kylie Pohio

Jingo Bingo take 3!

For the third year we ran Jingo Bingo mid-season and me oh my did our community show up. A HUGE thank you to everyone that participated in supporting our club, it was great to see faces from our extended community. We wouldn't be able to operate without the people that turn up to these events and make it what it is.

Our spring chicken hits 50! 🐣

This is a special milestone for many around the club, with Brooklyn having played her junior years with us.

Back in Brooklyns early days of womens football, she could often be seen sprinting from her youth game, to the changing rooms and getting into her senior club uniform to play in our Women's Seconds team. Since then, Brooklyn has gone from strength to strength, developing her game and cementing herself as a permanent fixture in our WSPL side.

Time really does fly, and celebrating Brooklyn's 50th premier game is making a few of us feel a little old!

Brooklyn, we're incredibly proud of you, go hard💚💛

It is with incredibly heavy hearts that we share the passing of one of the true pillars of our club, Malcolm Barnes.

Malcolm joined Green Island AFC in 1955 and dedicated more than seven decades of his life to the club he loved. As a player, he proudly represented Otago at U16, U18 and U20 level before progressing to senior football.

From 1973 to 1984, Malcolm coached teams of all ages across the club, while also serving as coach of the Otago U16 side during the same period. Beyond the dugout, he contributed tirelessly in numerous administrative roles and represented football on the Combined Sports Board.

In recognition of his outstanding service, Malcolm was awarded Life Membership of Green Island Association Football Club in 1985.

Until the very end, Malcolm could still be seen around Sunnyvale supporting the club. He was a proud Green Island man whose commitment, passion and presence helped shape generations of players, coaches and supporters. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

The Dunedin football community has experienced immense loss over the past week. It serves as a poignant reminder to take the time to say hello to our mates, share a conversation on the sidelines, and cherish the people who make our football community so special.

A celebration of Malcolm's life will be held at Sunnyvale from 3:00pm on Monday the 15th of June.

Our thoughts and condolences are with Malcolm's family, friends and all those whose lives he touched.

Rest in peace, Malcolm.
