Happy Humpday Skaters!!

Keep pushing through the week, we’re almost at the weekend 😮‍💨

No derby for a week makes Grievous a grumpy grommet….how the rest of my Dunedin Derby teamies doing??? 😬😅
Our skate venue is booked all week so we’re on hiatus 😪🤪

Nearly back to normal though!!

Thank all the skate gods 🤗🙏💜💚

Sometimes Jamming is…. The social media 🎥 screaming advice at you from behind a camera, & the opposing Brace yelling at her teamies to “hit her!! Hit her!!” 🤗😅😘

We love you Kate Kavanagh 💜💚

Video was taken during a little mixed level scrimmage at the end of our training session, where the objective was to work on our “dongle” blocking from the outside of the track, not attached to the wall but kind of like a wee swing arm, bumping the jammer back into our tripod & then wrapping said jammer up in a nice little “snuggly burrito”.

😊 Goodtimes

Dunedin Derby is excited watching our first Learn To Skate for Juniors Class progressing.

One of my favourite parts of it is watching one of my teammates & fellow coach, having their daughter take part.

Lucy has been a Dunedin Derby supporter since she was in the womb!!! 😅🤩 So to see Lucy finally getting to take part in the League is a real full-circle moment.

I spoke to Lucy on our first session & asked them how they felt about this momentous occasion…..”pretty good” , they informed me & then promptly asked when we’d be covering Hockey Stops 😳🤯😅 , I also heard they had been quietly working behind the scenes trying to lay the groundwork for the first official Junior Afterparty!!!!!! 😅😅😅😅 Poor Zoe is definitely going to be in for a ride I would say!!! 🤭😉

We love you Lucyfer! Don’t you change a bit & I cannot wait to see this kid absolutely own the track in the future!! 🫶🫶🫶

🎥🎥🎥 apologies for the old video content possibly being a little hard to see in the smaller format…. That was Lucy reffing (in the jammer panty) a couple of years back….

During our training today we used a favourite drill of Dunedin Derby.

It has good opportunities for both the Jammer & the Blocker in this drill… with our Jammer in the white top racing along the row of cones to try & hit the gap & then push forwards to the next line of cones, & ideally as the drill ramps up you will try to race the blocker there, but for the start, the Blocker (here shown in the black top) will race along the other side of the cones & execute a Side-Catch to catch the Jammer, with both skaters facilitating the drill.

The Jammer once caught, will drive straight down the line to the next row of cones, then turn & race for the gap at the end of the next row of cones…

Blockers will try & maintain contact with the Jammer, holding them in the initial side-catch but then squaring up into a forwards facing blocking position, also to be noted we can add progression to the blocking technique as skills progress!

Have you used this drill??

Just leaving this here 🤓👉👈

I’m also just saying if you watch through til the end you may see a skater getting very warmed up during warm-ups….😉

Rumour is Kate Kavanagh may still be flying across the floor of the Edgar Centre 😜🙂‍↕️🫡

Seriously though… nice hit Zoe 🫡

You’re both awesome!!! 🙌

PART 2: Obstacle Course On-Skates 🤗

As mentioned in the previous post, the Obstacle Course used for our Warm Ups before we get our gear on can definitely be used After as well.

Coach Zoe is demonstrating how we used it on Sunday.

Such a good drill to use a variety of different skates skills, & because it has so many ways to keep levelling it up with the addition of more obstacles, adding Blockers or even going through it in pairs or as a Time Trial, it can be used over & again without becoming boring.

If you are inspired to set up an Obstacle Course after seeing ours, please tag us in your videos!! 🎥📸 We would love to see it!!

Dunedin Derby warm ups are always a very quiet & serious affair……. Said absolutely noone EVER!! 😅😅😅

Lately we have been using Obstacle or Agility Courses to warm up off-skates & then we can use them again when we are skating! 🙌

You can vary your ‘obstacles’ to facilitate what you are wanting to focus the warm up on, to link it with the drills you have lined up to work on.
Eg. Cones to encourage focus & footwork, weaving & direction changes, Pads to hit & spin off, hurdles to jump or step over, foam noodles to get low under or use as a speed ladder to step over….the possibilities are endless! 🤗

Throwing Blockers into the mix is also a fun way to keep progressing this drill.
