MEET THE TEAM
Michelle Waugh – Kitchen Manager

For the past year, Michelle has been helping keep members and visitors well fed and well looked after as Kitchen Manager at the Otago Golf Club. From day-to-day café service through to catering for Club events and private functions, Michelle plays an important role in creating the welcoming atmosphere members enjoy both on and off the course.

Michelle says one of her favourite parts of the role is meeting new people and looking after Club members, helping ensure everyone feels welcome when they come through the doors.

A typical day in the kitchen can involve everything from preparing cabinet food and meals for members through to catering for functions and events, with no two days ever quite the same.

Outside of work, Michelle enjoys gardening and walking – a nice balance to the fast pace of kitchen life.

When asked about her favourite spot at the Club, Michelle’s answer was an easy one: enjoying a morning coffee from the café while looking out over the golf course.

MEET THE TEAM
Hayden Coutts – Greenkeeper and Projects and Asset Lead

Recently stepping into the additional role of Projects and Assets Lead, Hayden now also oversees a range of maintenance and improvement projects across the Club property, dedicating around 12 hours each week to project work alongside his regular greenskeeping responsibilities.

A typical day for Hayden involves course set-up for daily play, weekly maintenance programmes, and ensuring the course is presented to the highest possible standard for members and visitors alike.

Having worked at the Club for just under 10 years, Hayden first joined as an apprentice before heading overseas, returning nearly five years ago as 2IC of the greenskeeping team. He enjoys interacting with members and takes pride in producing a course that people genuinely love playing.

“Greenskeeping can sometimes be seen as just sitting on a lawn mower, but there is a lot more to it than visitors or members realise,” Hayden says.

Outside of work, Hayden enjoys dirt biking, mountain biking, a bit of golf, catching up with mates, and tinkering away on projects around the house.

His favourite view at the Club? Looking up the freshly striped 18th fairway.

MEET THE TEAM
Craig Parata – Course Superintendent

If you have spent any time at Otago Golf Club, you have seen the results of Craig Parata's work. As Course Superintendent, Craig leads the team responsible for presenting the course to the high standard that members and visitors enjoy year-round.

Now in his 26th year at the Club, Craig oversees the day-to-day operations of the course, ensuring staff have the tools, resources and support they need to achieve the desired results. One of the things he enjoys most about the role is that no two days are ever the same. He takes great pride in working alongside a dedicated team of staff and volunteers who are all striving for excellence and the highest level of course presentation.

Craig says one thing many golfers may not realise is the impact every player has on the condition of the course. He also highlights the countless hours that go into preparing the course for competition play, along with the ongoing challenge of managing playing surfaces in the face of changing weather and climatic conditions.

Outside of work, Craig enjoys following his children's sporting pursuits throughout both summer and winter. He is a keen sports fan generally and also enjoys spending time in the kitchen cooking.

When asked about his favourite places around the Club, Craig had a few. The Glen holds a special place, whether he is working or playing, thanks to its unique environment. Tipperary is his favourite hole, with its dramatic elevation changes, character and challenge from tee to green. In the clubhouse, you cannot go past a schnitzel and a beer, although a coffee and biscuits at smoko rate highly as well. As for the best view, Craig says the outlook from the clubhouse has been transformed by the tree removals completed in early 2025, opening up views of both the course and surrounding native landscape.

After more than a quarter of a century at Otago Golf Club, Craig's passion for the course and commitment to continual improvement remain as strong as ever.

A friendly reminder about pace of play and course etiquette

As we move through the season, we would like to remind all members and visitors of the importance of maintaining a good pace of play and showing consideration for others on the course.

Golf is a game enjoyed by players of all ages and abilities. Some groups will naturally play faster than others, and a little patience and understanding goes a long way in ensuring everyone has an enjoyable experience.

Please help by:
• Being ready to play when it is your turn.
• Keeping up with the group in front, rather than focusing solely on the group behind.
• Limiting time spent looking for lost balls.
• Marking scorecards at the next tee where possible.
• Allowing faster groups through when appropriate and safe to do so.
• Treating fellow players, staff, volunteers and the course itself with courtesy and respect.

Above all, remember that we are all here for the same reason – to enjoy our golf, our club, and the company of others. A little patience, good etiquette, and consideration for fellow golfers helps create a positive experience for everyone.

Thank you for doing your part to make Otago Golf Club a welcoming and enjoyable place to play.
