James Douglas Personal Training My passion is helping people find success in their fitness journey through quality movement!

I am a personal trainer based in Dunedin working out of Let's Go Fitness Gym on Crawford St. My passion in fitness is helping people find success in their fitness journey through quality movement! I’m 31 years old and have had a lifelong interest in the outdoors and exercise! Throughout my youth I spent time in the Boy Scouts doing various outdoor activities such as camping, tramping, and canoeing

. I started whitewater kayaking in my teen years which has become one of my main hobbies and passions. As an athlete myself, I competed in cross country, track and field and ultimate frisbee- competing at the Pennsylvania State level in the 300m and 110m hurdles in high school and at the regional level in ultimate frisbee for the Syracuse University team in New York State. I have over a decade of experience leading youth in the outdoors as a raft guide, kayak instructor, and summer camp counselor at various places in the USA. During the coronavirus lockdowns, I started to take my health and fitness more seriously and got more involved in my local CrossFit affiliate. Last year, I decided to change up my career goals and got certified as a personal trainer while I worked as a climbing instructor at my local climbing gym. Now that my partner Hannah is studying Physics at the University of Otago, I have started training people at Let’s Go Fitness. My goals as a trainer are to help people move better, improve their overall health and fitness, and become the best versions of themselves!

Hey guys! Just a bit about me- I’ve been helping teach people how to move and get active my entire life. Starting out as a summer camp counselor from the age of 14 teaching skills from Archery to Rock Climbing to Whitewater Kayaking, I’ve had experience getting people to learn new skills even in challenging environments!

In 2020, I became certified as a Personal Trainer after getting into CrossFit at my local affiliate in Corvallis, Oregon. Since I moved to Dunedin in 2022 I’ve been practicing as a personal trainer leading 1-1 training sessions, writing programs for strength, conditioning, and climbing, as well as leading multiple group fitness classes per week. Outside of my personal training, I work as a climbing instructor and route-setter at Resistance Climbing Gym and try to get outdoors as much as possible.

No matter what your passion is, I can help you get better at it and get fitter along the way!

A good video from Focus Physio showing two different ways of squatting! Neither is wrong or unsafe, but they do employ different muscles and take advantage of different strengths. When I work with my clients, we learn about the different styles of squats and what situations each type works best. Sometimes it’s just personal preference, or you might need to work around a limitation in mobility, or your personal fitness goals might lead you towards a particular style. If you want to learn how to squat safely and effectively for you and for your goals, message me today and we can work on mastering that squat!

Breakfast! The most important meal of the day. Here are three different options I've made at home recently that serve different dietary preferences and work for different kinds of mornings.

1- Avocado toast with sprouts and oven roasted tomatoes, caramelized onion and potato hash, and fried eggs

2- Oatmeal bonanza- instant oats mixed with h**p seeds and chia seeds, topped with peanut butter, banana, honey, nuts and seeds

3- Mexi vegan breakfast- re-fried smoky black beans, tofu egg scramble, and oven fried potatoes.

All three meals provide a solid start to the day, albeit in different ways, and have a good mix of carbs, protein, and healthy fats to keep you going! If you want some diet advice DM me today and I can help you out with menu ideas, shopping strategies, and basic principles to eat healthy and stay fueled for your workouts!

Here's April's Tips of the Month!

This month is all about support- we're all on our own fitness journey, but that doesn't mean we have to be alone! Finding support from friends & family, and working to surround yourself with people who have the same goals as you is super important. Make sure you have a network of people who support you so that when you need a helping hand, you don't have far to reach!

Having a personal trainer can be a great way to jump start that support network at the gym. I know people who have been where you've been, and who have gotten to where you are going! I can introduce you to those people to help you build your support network. Of course, I'll also be there to help you stay motivated with your training if you hire me for 1 on 1 time 😎

Take a look at my tips for the month for some ways to use support to help you achieve your goals- and if you want some more advice DM me to get started today!
