✨ Long term meditation, fortitude and grit ✨
Research into mindfulness meditation has established a positive link between mindfulness and grit. Mindfulness-based interventions are increasingly used to improve grit by helping individuals manage stress and focus on long-term goals, similar to how training helps athletes.
What is grit? Grit, defined as perseverance and passion for long term goals (Duckworth et al. 2007), is a critical predictor of high achievement and resilience. Grit is the resilience that helps you absorb the blows and withstand the storms of life; it is the mental and emotional courage in the face of pain and the ability to keep showing up and work towards long-term goals despite setbacks.
Dispositional mindfulness has been found to be positively linked to cognitive flexibility and the tendency to use adaptive coping strategies, such as positive reappraisal, when dealing with stressful situations (Moore and Malinowski, 2009; Weinstein et al. 2009).
Both athletes and meditators grit is linked to perseverance of effort, managing frustration and the mental discipline required to keep going.
Psychological science indicates that athletes and long-term meditators both exhibit superior executive functions - specifically inhibitory control (capacity to stay focused), working memory and cognitive flexibility (capacity to find solutions to problems).
