Kia ora koutou,

We, at Ngāti Kahungunu Ki Tāmaki Nui-a-Rua Basketball would like to invite everybody to a evening of fun and enjoyment at the Dannevirke Sports Centre on Thursday the 15th of December. Our theme will be Christmas with plenty of kai and spot prizes, entry is gold coin.

This event is to financially assists those players from Tamaki Nui a Rua attending Maori Basketball Nationals in 2023.

We look forward to seeing everybody Thursday the 15th of December from 5pm - 7pm.

Kia ora koutou,

A massive weekend of games, 2 days of competitive basketball accumulating with the premiership final between FGA from Wellington and Big Ballers from Dannevirke and Pahiatua with Big Ballers taking out an awesome final. The second final was between Crack a lag and Baby Rockers with a lot of young impressive talent on display with Crack a lag coming out on top in the mixed grade final.

We, at Ngāti Kahungunu Ki Tāmaki Nui-a-Rua Basketball would like to thank the referees, people who helped with bench duty and all the teams that came out to support our competition, with a special thanks to FGA who came from Wellington to play and the filipino community of Tararua who came out to support us in our tournament.

We look forward to hosting more tournaments in the future and seeing more awesome talent compete in the future.

Ngati Kahungunu Ki Tamaki Nui-a-Rua Basketball have some exciting news, on the 19th and 20th of November we will be hosting our annual 2 day basketball competition, held at the Dannevirke Sports Centre.

Tournament is limited to a maximum of 6 teams, if you would like to enter a team please contact us via the information provided on the poster.

We look forward to seeing everybody at the tournament.

Kia ora koutou,

Unfortunately due to the New Zealand Government putting the whole of New Zealand into red in the traffic light system, the 2022 Maori Basketball Nationals has been canceled.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all players, managers, coaches, support staff, and parents for helping us field a team to compete in the 2022 Nationals. Ngāti Kahungunu ki Tāmaki Nui-a-Rua for your continued support and Tararua Community Youth Services for sponsoring supplies we needed for the tournament, without your help we wouldn't have even been able to register 4 teams, especially with the challenges we had to overcome last year due to Covid-19.

We look forward to upcoming tournaments and a potential regional tournament later in the year, we also thank you for supporting this page.

We have just received an updated version of the rules around Covid-19 that we will be following at Maori Basketball Nationals. The main points listed below will be what players and spectators will need to follow.

Players and spectators will need to be double vaxed and provide their vaccination pass on entry to the stadium.

Players and spectators 17 years and older will need to provide ID along with their vaccination passes.

Players and spectators 16 years and under have been asked to provide ID if possible to go along with their vaccination passes, if they don’t have any ID a coach or manager will need to be with players 16 and under to enter the stadium.

Unless playing or refereeing you must wear a face mask.

We at Ngāti Kahungunu Ki Tāmaki Nui-a-Rua Basketball hope that everybody has had a great Christmas and great start to the new year.

As we're preparing for the 2022 Maori Basketball Nationals we have received the draw for this upcoming tournament which is attached below, minus the quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals.

Kia ora koutou,

What an excellent day we had yesterday at the inaugural CHB Basketball Invitational, thank you to CHB Basketball for hosting such a awesome tournament, we look forward to competing in this tournament annually. Ngati Kahungunu ki Tamaki Nui a Rua was able to field 2 teams, an U13 team, and a U15 team competing in the U17 grade.

Our U15 team played 3 round robin games, going 3 - 0 in round robin play, 57 - 46 vs CHB, 56 - 42 vs Ahuriri and 80 - 53 vs Hastings, finishing first after round robin play and coming up against CHB in the final.

The final was a very intense game, CHB came out firing taking a lead of 19 points in the second quarter, but the team fought very hard to bring the game back to 3 points with 5 seconds to go in the game with the ball in our possession, this gave the U15’s enough time to come up with one play to take the game into overtime, the team executed a play which got one of the boys open for a wide open 3 in the corner but came up short in a very competitive game, well done to CHB.

The U13’s had an impressive tournament, coming together 3 weeks before the tournament to train and gel as a team. The U13’s played 4 games in round robin play, the first was against Ahuriri Kotiro, winning 24 - 18, the second was against CHB Tama, at one stage CHB had an impressive lead 17 - 6 going into the second half, the U13’s fought very hard to get back into the game trailing by 4 points with 2 minutes to go in the second half, however CHB was able to hang onto the lead giving the team their first loss of the tournament 26 - 20. The third game was against CHB Mixed, where the U13’s won 26 - 18, the final game of the round robin was against Swish, which Swish won 46 - 16.

The final game for the U13’s was a placing game for 3rd and 4th against Ahuriri Kotiro, in this game both teams gave it their all but in the end Ahuriri Kotiro were too good for our team on this day, winning 26 - 16.

A big thank you goes out to parents for allowing their children to compete at this tournament for the day, the coaches and parents that came up to help and support the teams, and finally the players for putting in all the effort on the day.

Kia ora koutou,

What an awesome tournament we had over the past 3 days, so many games coming down to the wire, overtime games, games decided by 1, 2 or 3 points, games decided by last second shots, what an awesome weekend we had.

Firstly, before we get into what happened today a number of thanks need to be made, our thanks go to the teams, supporters, bench attendance and referees for their help over the weekend, a huge, huge thank you goes out to you all.

What an excellent day we had today, 3rd and 4th and 1st and 2nd. Our day started off with Whanau vs Ngati Kahungunu ki Tamaki Nui a Rua U15, this game was entertaining from the get go, with both teams playing physical hard nosed defense and putting up many points in a high scoring intense game. The game was comfortably in the hands of Whanau with 3 minutes to go in the game, whanau had a 10 point lead but that was cut to 2 points with 5 seconds to go, and with Ngati Kahungunu ki Tamaki Nui a Rua U15 having the ball in their possession after calling a timeout the game was there's for the taking.

Ngati Kahungunu drew an awesome play up to get an open 3 pointer but it came up short, giving Whanau the victory by 2 points.

The final was played between CHB Toa and Ngati Kahungunu ki Tamaki Nui a Rua Tahi. The game started off at a frantic pace, both teams were playing some awesome defense and executing at a high rate. The game had everything in it, from clutch shots, half and full court pressing, blocks, steals and even a missed free throw put back dunk which had fans and teams from both sides very impressed.

The game was up for grabs with 2 minutes left in the game, with CHB Toa having a small lead and extending their lead by hitting a few clutch shots down the stretch which gave CHB Toa a lead of 10 with 1 minute left in the game. Ngati Kahungunu ki Tamaki Nui a Rua hit a few shots towards the closing stages of the game but in the end it was too much to overcome, with CHB Toa winning the first Ngati Kahungunu ki Tamaki Nui a Rua Open Championship 58 - 53.

Congratulations to CHB Toa for winning the 2021 tournament.
