Every great estate has a story. Here’s one of ours.

In 1983 a young Prince Charles, now King Charles III, visited Hololio Estate as a guest of founder and polo player Nick Jones. Here he is pictured outside the historic Munro woolshed, which at the time served as Nick’s polo stables — at the very beginning of what would become one of New Zealand’s most celebrated polo clubs.

Over four decades later, the Hololio Polo Club remains exactly what it was built to be — a world-class home for the sport, rooted in passion, history, and an extraordinary piece of land in Clevedon.

The polo action returns to Hololio this December. Until then, our players are taking a well-earned break after a season that gave us plenty to be proud of.

IN THE MONEY THIS WEEK

Ferg Butterick’s Piper (reg’d name Don’t Doubt Choux) saved South Island polo playing thoroughbreds from embarrassment on the racetracks this week when Hasstorock, a 3 year old filly by US Navy Flag out of Paris Rock (who is out of a half-sister to There’s No Doubt the mother of Piper) was the only close relative in the money when finishing 3rd over 1500 metres at Ellerslie on Saturday

Breeders from Argentina, UK to South Africa and Australia continue to shape the highest level of polo and supply the horsepower behind the sport’s biggest teams.

IN THE MONEY THIS WEEK

Two South Island thoroughbred polo ponies had siblings fill the placings in the same race at Riccarton last Wednesday.

The Turner Family’s Luna (reg’d name Fah Sai) had a half-brother get some of the money when Fah Rong, a 4 year old gelding by Rios out of Diamond Lindauer (the mother of Luna) finished 2nd while the Dormer Family’s Wonky had a half-sister also enjoy some success when Queen Courtney, a 3 year old filly by War Decree out of Madam Courtney (the mother of Wonky) finished 3rd in the same race

Andrew Messervy’s Tye (reg’d name Justwonprincess) had a close relative in the money at Tauranga on Friday when Beabopalula, a 3 year old filly by Turn Me Loose out of Arctic Breeze (a half-sister to Tye) finished 3rd over 1400 metres

Charlie Somerville’s Gus (reg’d name Getshorty) had another family member find the winner’s circle at Rosehill on Saturday when Couples Retreat, a 4 year old mare by Super Seth out of Date Night (a daughter of Dating, a half-sister to Gus) was successful over 1100 metres
