May 23rd Closing day 25/26 season.

10 shooters gathered for the final day of then Malvern Rifle Club's 2025/26 season, including visitors from the West Coast, Ashburton & Oamaru.

Another great Autumn afternoon for shooting, with little cloud & little wind - though temperatures were cooler.

We shot "longs" 10 counting shots at 800 then 900 yards.
Scores weren't kept though some good scores were seen.

Alan with John & Terri's assistance used a portable table to shoot benchrest. The 800 & 900 yard mounds are best suited for the less able shooter.

Our range is closed until early October, though there will be a working bee held at the end of September.

For those wishing to shoot during the winter the Ashburton District Rifle Club will be shooting on Sundays at their range.

Saturday May 16 Canterbury Champion of Champions
18 shooters gathered on a cool clear blue sky autumn afternoon for the annual Canterbury Champion of Champions Match where the champions (& runners up) from each grade in their respective club – Malvern & Ashburton - competitions shoot shoulder to shoulder for the title of Canterbury Champion which is shot over 300, 500 & 600 yards with 10 counting shots over each distance.

Before shooting began the recent death of Ashburton Club member Brian Hawksby was acknowledged with Coby saying a few words about Brian and a period of silence in memory taking place.

The temperature may have been cold, but the competition was hot.

Some representatives were unable to be present leaving 11 competitors to compete for the coveted Canterbury Champion title. The other shooters shot when space was available.

Competition was tight in the TR-A grade with Chris shooting clean to win by one point from John & Martin who were separated by centres. Allan White also shot clean with a higher centre count than Chris. John, Martin & Richard shot possibles at 2 / 3 distances.

In TR-B Kevin beat John by a single point with Rob 4 points further back.

In FTR Coby beat Mark by 3 points with Brian a further 3 points back. Mark shot a possible at 500 yards but couldn’t match Coby’s 59.4 at 600 yards.

It was close in F-Open with Charlie shading Murray at every distance to win by 3 points with Charlie shooting a possible at 500 & 600 yards & Murray a possible at 600 yards.

The scores reflected the great conditions and the skill of the shooters.

Saturday May 9 600 yards

A truly special Autumn afternoon greeted shooters who arrived to set up for a 600 yards training day. Blue skies and a very light wind instead of the gale force north-westerly winds that had been forecast.

Two shooters want to confirm their zero settings at 300 yards - which we recommend if anyone is unsure of their zero. After that was done we moved to 600 yards for the shooring.

Again scores weren't recorded as shooters were mainly testing loads - powder types, powder weights or projectile seating depths.

Next week:
Saturday May 16 Champions of Champions
The Champions of the Malvern Rifle Club shoot off against the Champions of the Ashburton District Rifle Club for the prestige of being Canterbury Champions.
There will be space and time for others to shoot as well.
