👏6️⃣🤷‍♂️7️⃣🏆 Well done to the St Albans 67ers, who joined the winners' circle in their maiden season with the club, claiming the Cavaliers T20 Section Black Major Championship.

The side enjoyed a brilliant first summer, only losing once on the park ... and once to the lure of Electric Avenue. Their sole on-field defeat didn't take place until the penultimate week of the season, when the Chin Swingers again lived up to their role as Saints derby spoilers.

Alas, that result meant the 67ers missed out on a rematch in the minor competition final (which the Swingers sadly went on to lose to the Easts Punjabi Kings), but they did win the 3rd place playoff against the Sydenham Cardinals.

As a new team to the Cavaliers grade, the 67ers were effectively joining as the 32nd ranked side, eventually working their way up to be 10th of the 34 teams to have played this year; they have well and truly earned their place in the top section at the beginning of next season.

They ended the season with a 16-2 record after winning their first 13 games. Their success means Saints now joins Burnside, Easts & Heathcote as clubs with 3 different Cavs title-winning units; the 67ers following in the footsteps of the Fozzies (5 titles) and Chin Swingers (3).

The side is formed largely around a bunch of ex-Christ's College schoolmates and includes a few faces already familiar within the St Albans club: Harry Greenwood and skipper Josh Erasmus had a stint with the Buccaneers, Jack Belcher had appeared on-and-off in the morning grades since 2019 and even Shyam Hari returned after playing Kiwi cricket aged 6, back during the days where we had a junior boys side.

The well-rounded squad regularly changed up their batting order so everyone had the opportunity to contribute, meaning there were no statistical stand-outs but as many as 8 players made 200+ runs and 6 took 10+ wickets. With an average age of 23, it'll be exciting to see this talented and versatile side perform against consistently stronger opposition next season.

The winning squad included: Liam Alexander, Jack Belcher, Sam Belcher, Tom Clarke, Jake Cummings, Josh Erasmus, Will Gooch, Harry Greenwood, Shyam Hari, Zach Landon-Lane and Caleb Manson.

👏🐻🏆 The Fozzies have done it again! It's another trophy in the bulging cabinet for the premier Saints T20 side. In today's Minor Competition final played on Hagley 5, a total of 140/2 was built on the foundation of retirements from Chris Bird (40) and Shanan Stewart (42) and topped off by an unbeaten 31 from the evergreen Kade Atkinson. A target of 7-an-over on an artie might well be a cinch, but when playing on the largest lower grade turf ground in the city it's quite another story. The Fozzies gave away just 3 fours and 1 maximum in 20 overs, with the Halswell Blazers sputtering to 96/7 in their 20 overs, for a decisive 44-run margin.

In fine conditions in front of an amazing crowd of 40+ Fozzies alumni, families and club members the team sprayed the champers to celebrate a 5th title in the space of 6 seasons with the club (to go with a couple of others earned back in the day at other clubs). They join a rare selection of teams who have picked up at least one piece of silverware in 3 consecutive seasons.

St Albans Cavaliers Fozzies T20 title collection:
🏆 2020/21 (Section 2)
🏆🏆 2023/24 (Section 1 - Major + Minor)
🏆 2024/25 (Section Red - Major)
🏆 2025/26 (Section 1 - Minor)

Note that in recent years, due to the Cavaliers grade being so large (35 entries throughout this season), teams compete for a major championship title during the round-robin before either being split into smaller sections or going straight to knockouts to compete for the minor championship to close out the season. The team were unfortunate not to get a chance to claim the double this season as their match against eventual winners Sumner was washed out. Winning 16 of 18 games this season, 1 of their 2 losses was a last-ball 6-run thriller against the Saints Chin Swingers in week 2.

The winning squad included: Kade Atkinson, Louis Bertie, Chris Bird, Matt Cameron, David Cattermole, Aaron Clarke, Ryan Coxon, Jeremy Good, Daniel Grinter, James Kirkpatrick, Hugo Langridge, Chris McIvor, Steve McLeod, Symon Pierce, John Stewart, Shanan Stewart, Marcus Stufkens, Dave Sutherland, Damian Whiting and Nick Yardley. 💙💛

⛪🕯️🌹 Jim Henderson's celebration of life service takes place at 1pm tomorrow at the Hope Chapel, 27 Amyes Road in Hornby. For those who can't make it in person, you can watch the live stream on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/live/QGsFuINO6EQ. All Christchurch club games will observe a moment's silence for Jim before play on Saturday. It would also be a great gesture if St Albans teams wore black armbands to recognise Jim's contribution to the game as a great Saints man. 💙💛

💐💔 The St Albans Cricket Club mourns the loss of club cricket identity Jim Henderson, who passed away last night at the age of 70. Jim was involved in multiple areas of the game in Canterbury, firstly as a young Saints player fresh from school in 1974. He played mostly in the morning grades for 10 years, then returned for another 4 seasons in the late '90s in President's grade.

Taking 318 wickets in 106 appearances, perhaps his 2 most notable playing achievements were an astounding 70-wicket season for 3rd grade in 1979/80 (nobody has come close to this tally for the club in the 46 years since) and smashing 117* in just 16 overs for the President's Blue side v Sydenham in 1996/97. His career-best figures of 8-20 (match haul of 11-27) came while guesting for 9th grade (bowling East Shirley out twice in a day in 1978/79). He also took a hat-trick for 3rd grade v St Thomas' in 1981/82.

Having already gained considerable experience as a senior basketball referee, Jim immediately took up umpiring upon retiring from playing cricket, taking charge of hundreds of Premier club games over the course of 2 decades. He later got to stand in games alongside son David, who followed in his - and that of his twin brother John's - footsteps. Jim later served as president and became a life member of the Canterbury umpires' association.

Furthering his involvement in the game, Jim took up scoring and proved a good luck charm in his one full season with the Saints Premier men's team, who won an unprecedented 20 games to claim a unique treble in 2020/21.

The club extends its condolences to Jim's wife of 46 years, Janice, son David, daughter Claire and the wider Henderson family. 💙💛

🔴⚫ Congratulations to Lachie Harper on making his provincial debut today, becoming Saints' 65th Canterbury men's rep player. Staring down the barrel at a record defeat Lachie effortlessly peeled off a 27-ball 42 including 3 💣s on his way to posting the highest score by a No. 10 in Super Smash history. 🔥
