FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich nominates Grandmaster Eugenio Torre (Philippines) as a Chairman of Appeals' Committee for 44th FIDE . Legendary player and first Asian Grandmaster, Eugenio Torre holds a record for the most Olympiad participations (23), and now, serving as Appeals' Committee Chairman he will bring in his experience and understanding of the spirit of chess.

"Grandmaster Torre is a true legend. For Asia and for the whole chess world. I find it deeply symbolic that he is going to serve as a Chairman of Appeals' Committee at the Olympiad , an outstanding event, at which Eugenio holds not less outstanding record. I hope he won't have too many difficult decisions to take - but if he will, we all may rely on his wisdom," says FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich.

The world governing body decided in an extraordinary meeting today to find a new host for the event following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. In doing so, FIDE follows Uefa moving the Champions League final to Paris and the FIA stripping Russia of its Formula 1 Grand Prix.

The 13th world chess champion was the world's top player for over 20 years and is one of the greatest of all time. He retired from competitive chess in 2005 but continues to promote the game through his NYC-based Kasparov Chess Foundation and occasionally takes part in St. Louis Chess Club blitz and rapid events.
