We’re incredibly grateful to Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust and Pelorus Trust for supporting our Christchurch Netball team to attend the Netball New Zealand NetballSmart Open Representative Championships in Napier last week.

Opportunities like this come with significant costs, and the generous support of our grant funders helps make it possible for our players and management team to represent Christchurch on the national stage.

We’re incredibly grateful for your continued investment in our netball community and for helping our representative teams take part in these important opportunities.

Ngā mihi nui, Air Rescue and Community Services and Pelorus Trust!🙌

That’s a wrap on the Netball NZ Open Representative Champs in Napier!

While today’s final was a tough one, falling to Waitākere 57-41, we couldn’t be prouder of how our Christchurch Open Team fought all week.

Led by experienced legends, this young squad stepped up with nail-biting performances and incredible growth, securing 8th place overall and proving the future belongs to them🔥

A massive shoutout to the team behind the team:

- Physio Extraordinaire: Jeremy McTear from Health and Sport Central.

- Coaching Legends: Marama Lynch and Lee McKenzie for their continuous guidance, strategy, and dedication.

A big thanks to everyone who followed along and supported us this week! ❤️🖤

Day three vibes were fizzing! Wanting to come in and disrupt the top 8 playoffs

Harbour - a very close game to start the day, losing by 1 in the final seconds! goal for goal, the girls brought their all.

“The netball careers of some of the players in this team have taken off in this game” - Kate Grant (captain)

Auckland - The bodies were definitely feeling the sixth game effort, pushed them hard and made them work. Bringing work ons into tomorrows game, wanting to finish the campaign off strong 💪 💪

Final day tomorrow, excited to see what it brings! Let’s finish strong - playing off for 7/8 against Waitākere❤️🖤

⚡️Day 2 NetballSmart NNZ Open Representative Champs⚡️

“Day two brought two hard-fought matches and plenty of heart from the girls! 💪

Game 1 vs Manawatu Green: We came out strong and battled the whole way through. Manawatu managed a late surge in the final quarter, taking a close one 35-31.

Top 8 Secured! Despite the nail-biter, we officially locked in our spot in the Top 8 and moved into the next pool stage! 🎉

Game 2 vs Tauranga: After a slow start this evening, the team showed incredible resilience. They dug deep, displayed real grit, and wore their hearts on their sleeves right up to the final whistle, ultimately falling to an experienced Tauranga 40-33.

Looking Ahead to Tomorrow:
The challenge continues as we take on Netball North Harbour and Auckland in the afternoon! Let’s keep building, learning, and leaving it all out on the court.” - Vicky Taggart, Opens Team Manager

We’re so proud of you all so far!❤️🖤

🏐🤝🏏Working together to strengthen opportunities for women and girls in sport

Christchurch Netball and Christchurch Metro Cricket Association are excited to be working together through a new partnership focused on creating more opportunities for women and girls to get involved, stay involved and thrive in sport.

Starting next week, our Game Officials Coordinator, Jess Littler, will begin a summer secondment with Christchurch Metro Cricket as Game Development Officer - Women and Girls.

The opportunity will allow Jess to bring her experience from netball into another sporting environment, while building new skills, sharing ideas and supporting the continued growth of women’s and girls’ cricket across Christchurch.

We see this partnership as a great example of what can be achieved when sporting codes work together - sharing knowledge, experience and people to strengthen sport for women and girls across our wider community❤️🖤

❤️Day 1 Netball Smart NNZ Open Representative Champs❤️

“After a relaxed morning and plenty of coffee, the team shook off the opening-game nerves and hit the court running:

Game 1: A strong 52–25 win over Taranaki! Once the butterflies settled, the combinations really started to flow.

Game 2: A gritty battle against a super tidy Hawke’s Bay side. It was a tight first half, but the girls dug deep to secure a 39–27 victory!

Two from two to kick off the tournament. But the competition didn’t stop on the court with tonight’s off-court team challenge being a MasterChef cook-off featuring an incredible three-course meal! Shout out to the defence end taking it out with chocolate cake and ambrosia.

Time to ice up, rest, and do it all again tomorrow!💪🔥” - Vicky Taggart, Opens Team Manager

❤️ A very deserving recognition for Vicky Taggart! 👏

Vicky was recently named Christchurch Netball’s Volunteer of the Year at our Centre Awards, and we’re thrilled to see her now recognised as the WM New Zealand Volunteer of the Month! 🏐

Thank you Vicky, for everything you do for our netball community!

Vicky Taggart was just 12 when she first picked up a whistle as an umpire. By 15, she was coaching and beginning a volunteer journey that has now spanned 14 years.

While her roles have changed over time, the reason she keeps returning has not.
