CBSA Canterbury Billiards and Snooker Assn

Thank you for entering the 2026 Canterbury Open snooker championship, the last of the CBSA ranking tournaments for 2026 before we hit " Nationals" week . We have a fantastic field of 40 competitors which is great to see and no doubt will bring a lot of close battles!! We will be playing Best of 3 in section play Saturday with top 2 in each section making the " last 16" Main draw Sunday. We will be doing the same as previous tournaments, " Foul and Miss" two misses allowed the third time will be just a foul, but make sure your attempt is genuine! If you need 3 or more snookers when on the colours only please concede and move on to the next frame or free up the table for further games to be played.
Dress code is either NZBSA polo shirt or long sleeved formal shirt of one colour or white, buttoned at the wrist with a waistcoat. This is to be worn with dress trousers and dress shoes (unless we already have your medical exemption for alternative dark coloured footwear.)
Those that are playing at Cuthberts Green rooms, CBSA will be providing food to sustain players during the day and we ask for a $5 donation each day towards this with CBSA covering the rest. Reminder to all players that we have raffles going during the weekend , two boxes of " Barkers" goods and 1 x $100 PnS gift card. There are 100 tickets in the Barkers raffle, tickets $3 each and one box for tickets 1-50 and one box for tickets 51-100. There are 60 tickets in the PnS gift card raffle which are again $3 each. All money from these raffles goes towards the Prize pool.
Below is the attached screenshots of the draw with Sections A,C,D,E.F & G playing at Cuthberts Saturday and Sections B & H at Hornby Club snooker rooms. Please marshall 8.30 for 8.45am start on Saturday at both venues.
Sunday will see the " Last 16" being played at Cuthberts Green rooms 8.15am marshall for 8.30am on the tables, you will be playing "Best of 5" , winners from this round will proceed to Hornby club where the Quarterfinals onwards will be played. 4 back games of the Trophy draw will be played at Hornby club first up with the winners then proceeding to Cuthberts for the remainder of the trophy games, these players to Marshall 8.30am for 8.45am on the tables.

I have finally managed to get the 16th person for the last round of the " One Framer" tournaments for 2026 and so the two sections for tomorrow's tournament are as follows:-

Section A

Kelly Pritchard, Dylan Engebretsen, Bryson Mckenzie, Ed Jackson, Mark Collis, Bruce Kay, Gary O' Neill, Jane Elliott

Section B

Paul Lewis, Peter de Groot, Nic Moses, John Gower, Dave Marshall, John Wilson, Murray Kirk, Harry Muir

Dress code smart casual, jeans and sneakers ok if clean and tidy. Entry fee $30 plus $5 towards food provided.

Marshall time 8.45am for 9am start

12 year old Harry Muir receiving his certificates from WPBSA accredited Coach Ian Muir (no relation) for successfully completing the “ White” and “ Red” ball curriculum.
“Well done” on also achieving his personal highest break during this session! Congratulations Harry !

August has been a month of lots of tournaments hosted by CBSA!!

August started off with the 2026 National Seniors and U21's played in Christchurch at Cuthberts Green rooms and Hornby club. A good field for the National Seniors ( over 40) snooker saw good section play and tough battles post section.

Finalists this year for Main draw were Mark Canovan and Ian Muir with the final going to Mark 3/1 . In the Trophy it was Malcom Po***ck and Nic Moses with Malcolm winning 3/1

In the Under 21's tournament we had 4 competitors and the section play results do not do justice to how close the games were as quite a number were wins on the final colours, black to win and a respot black also!!

Bryson McKenzie and Jordan Collis ( both Canterbury) were the two finalists in the Main draw with Charlotte Williams (Canterbury) and Alex McIntosh ( Southern) in the Trophy final.

Bryson won the main draw and 2026 U21 title with a 3/1 win over Jordan and in the Trophy Charlotte won that 3/1 over Alex.

The following weekend after the National tournaments, Canterbury hosted the 2026 Canterbury Women's snooker championships with ladies coming from Blenheim, Auckland and Kaiapoi/ Rangiora region north of Christchurch to compete in a wonderful field of 20 players.

Tough battles in section to see who the top 2 in each section would be to proceed to the Quarterfinals of the Main draw. Young cueist Charlotte Williams had a great day topping her section after a tough final game in section against Louise Kerr which went the full 3 frames and 2/1 to Charlotte.

Quarterfinals on Day 2 of the Canterbury Ladies saw some close and nail biting battles. Charlotte Williams won her quarterfinal match over Louise Kerr 3/0 as did Jojo Coleman over Kat McKenzie and Kimberley Cullen ( Auckland) over Liz Hullen. The quarterfinal that went the full 5 frames was Corien Simpson v Kimberlee Brewer (Blenheim). The match eventually went to Kimberlee Brewer 3/2.

Semi finals and Charlotte Williams had her chances to take the match against Jojo Coleman being 2/0 up and commanding the third frame but the " wheels" dropped off her game and Jojo, the renowned cueist that she is, fought back and took the third and then got into her flow and commanded the next two frames with experience of matches at the latter stages being the telling point. Jojo took the match 3/2.

In the other semi final Kimberley Cullen had a commanding lead 2/0 but Kimberlee Brewer had chances in the third to take that one but they slipped away and Kimberley Cullen took the match 3/0.

Jojo Coleman ( Canterbury) v Kimberley Cullen (Auckland) the two experienced cueists of various cue sports did battle with the match going the full 5 frames with Jojo Coleman crowned 2026 Canterbury Women's Champion!!

In the Trophy draw the final was between Catriona McLean and Trish O'Neill with the match going the full 3 frames and Catriona the victor 2/1

Day 2 of the George Robertson Memorial snooker championship saw more tough battles starting with the last 16 where half the matches went the full 5 frames. Danny Ryan and Dale Kwok had an intense battle between two players that know each others game well with it coming down to the last frame which Danny was the victor of in the end. Bill Earle and Paul van der Straten ( Auckland) also had a 5 frame battle which Bill was the victor, Michael Vermeulen and Ken Wood ( Nelson) also went the full distance with Ken winning that match but it came down to the last colours to do so. Paul Lewis and David Fomm-Ward also went to the full 5 frames and it could have been anyone's to have in the 5th frame both players had their chances but David managed to garner the victory.

In the Quarterfinals Danny Ryan had to dig deep again, having a full 5 frame battle with Sam Travis ( Auckland) before taking the win. Mark Canovan took David Fomm-Ward 3/0, Richard Winfield ( Invercargill) overcame Ken Wood 3/1 and Hassan Abdalla beat bill Earle 3/0.

Semi finals and both Mark Canovan and Hassan Abdalla had the better results with Mark taking Richard Winfield and Hassan taking Danny Ryan 3/0 in both matches.

Final was between last year's winner Hassan Abdalla ( Auckland) and Mark Canovan ( Canterbury). Both players knew that one slight error or rattle of ball in the pocket and the other one would capitalise on it such was the skill of both players!! Mark Canovan did just that in the first frame making a brilliant 66 to take the frame. Hassan came back in the 2nd frame and made consistent scores every time at the table to take a commanding lead which Mark could not pull back so it was 1 frame each! Mark had the better consistency in the next two frames and showed all, his exceptional control of the cue ball to take both frames and the match 3/1.

Mark Canovan's 78 break from yesterday stood the test for the day, plenty had chances to go higher but the cue ball didn't always go where wanted so Mark took the kudos of Highest Break for the tournament.

The Trophy was the strongest it has been for some time due to the fact it was very "cut throat" getting into the Last 16.
There were lots of full 3 frame battles throughout the draw with the two players that made the final being Kyri Michaelides (Canterbury) v Paul Whapshott (Blenheim). Kyri won the game 2/0 and made a 63 break!!

Day 1 of the George Robertson Memorial snooker championship saw some tough battles in section play to see who would be the top two from each section to qualify with the last games of the day being the telling point to who made " last 16" and who is playing the Trophy.

Main draw games will begin 8.30am at Cuthberts Green rooms as you are now playing " Best of 5" so please marshall 8.15am. Those that make it to the Quarterfinals will then go to Hornby club to play the remainder of the Main draw games.
4 Back games of the trophy will play at Hornby club first up and they are Michael Beattie v Isaiah Minnear; Graham Davies v Nic Moses; John Wilson v Malcolm Po***ck; John Isaacs v Catriona McLean so players please marshall 8.45 am for 9am on the tables.
The remainder of the Trophy players in the back rounds please marshall at 10am for games to begin once the Main draw players have finished with their tables.

The High Break bounced around today with players making 57 for both Hassan Abdalla and Sam Travis, 63 for Dale Kwok, 69 for Richard Winfield, 72 for Ian Muir and Danny Ryan and Mark Canovan topping the list with a 78! As they say " Tomorrow is another day!" so will 78 last the tournament or will we see a further flurry of breaks ??
