Today (12th September) marks 20 years since the 2006 World Wheelchair Rugby Championships was held in Christchurch. The event was hosted entirely by ParaFed Canterbury and was the 4th edition of the World Wheelchair Rugby Championships.

The competition was held at the Wolfbrook Arena (known then as Westpac Trust Arena) and was attended by the 12 best wheelchair rugby teams in the world. This included the New Zealand ‘Wheel Blacks’, who were hot off their gold medal winning performance from the Athens 2004 Paralympic Games.

After 5 days of incredible action, the final was played between the USA and New Zealand in front of 5000 ‘paying’ spectators. This was the first time that people paid to watch wheelchair rugby in this country. The final was also broadcast live on Sky TV. The USA defeated New Zealand 34-30, with Canada placing 3rd.

ParaFed Canterbury was acknowledged for their achievements of hosting the event by winning the Sport Canterbury Award for the Best International Sporting Event for 2006.

Our 8th annual ParaFed Canterbury Swim Meet was held at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre in Rolleston over the weekend. It was another great event, with everyone enjoying the friendly, relaxed, but competitive environment.

A huge thank you to Swimming Canterbury West Coast for once again delivering a fantastic competition. Thank you also to all the volunteers for helping with the timekeeping.

Our latest Academy Seminar was a session by Physiotherapist Louise Thayer on Injury Prevention "Building Resilient Athletes".

Last night's session was one of the best yet and included lots of practical examples that the athletes, coaches, officials and parents could take away with them.

Thank you to Louise for a great session and thank you also to Sport Canterbury for allowing us to use the facility at the Parakiore Recreation & Sports Centre.

Our Academy is proudly supported by The Freemasons Charity and Montreux Furniture.
