Today, our fabulous surf tour in North Sumatra came to an end, and what an experience it has been! Crazy jungle trek to meet the Orangutans, river rafting, amazing surf breaks, yummy food and most importantly: beautiful connection with the people we met.

We experienced everything: oppressive tropical heat, coral reef cuts, dinged surfboards, massive wipeouts. We, surf gals, had to adapt to local customs, covering up (even in the surf) to respect strict Muslim law. Buffalos, chickens, cows, and goats roaming the roads was definitely something you don’t see everyday. Sumatra’s way of life will definitely stay in our minds and hearts!

Thanks to Jen, Duncan, both Sam’s and the twins Luke and Kane for joining us in this awesome adventure! You guys rock 🤘

Tutorial “How to pop up on a surfboard for beginners”!

To wrap our tutorials season, we are bringing to you these free tips of how to stand up on the surfboard in one fluid motion, the POP UP! The main cues are:

1) Deep paddle strokes
2) Extra paddles when the wave hits you
3) Place hands flat on the board, tucked in. Arch up
4) Push and jump up onto the board
5) Stand slowly, stay low

Today we concluded our surf safe programme for this season with the amazing students from Te Waka Unua School. They were in great spirits!

This entry level programme is designed for school groups between the age of 8 -14 years. The programme teaches the basics of surfing and bodyboarding with a strong emphasis on surf safety and it has been running in schools in the Buller, Westland and Christchurch regions for over 20 years.

In Sumner, sun was out, wind was off and the waves were mint. Epic session 🤙

🔔 Tutorial Alert: How to paddle out surfing on a longboard!

In this short video we show some of the techniques that can be used to get out the back as you surf a longer board. Short boards require different techniques such as duck diving but with longboards or foams, turtle rolls and push up techniques are the most commom.

From the country to the beach! This week we had the pleasure of hosting Mayfield School learning to surf with us.

They traveled 2 hours from the foothills close to the Southern Alps to spend the morning with us in Sumner! How great for the kids to get to learn in and outside the rural setting!
