Our first season begins on 1 December 2014 and goes until 28 February 2015. This is an opportunity to experience wildlife in a natural environment on a privately owned Wilderness Park, and the unique Mataikona coastline in the Wairarapa. Okau walks are located on "Okau Station", Mataikona just a few kms from Castlepoint Beach and it's iconic Lighthouse. Walks start at sea level and rise to 1085 fe
et at the peak of Mount Percy. On the way to Mount Percy you will start in farmland and venture into native forest where deer, pigs, goats, wood pigeons, pheasants and other wildlife are in abundance. Stop in at "Roaring Stag" hut at take in the tranquility of nature. Then begin the 6km challenging climb to "Mount Percy's" hunters hut, there is plenty to look at while taking a breather. At 331 meters "Mt Percy" has amazing views of the Wairarapa, on a clear day you can see the Tararuas inland and as far as the eye can see out to the Pacific, take all this in while chilling out on the hunters deck. Then rapidly descend back down to sea level. walk along the beach enjoy the unique Mataikona rock formations, look in rock pools and gather paua on your return to the starting point.
