Craigieburn Trails - Castle Hill

Craigieburn Trails - Castle Hill The Craigieburn Trails are an extensive collection of dual-use walking/biking tracks in the stunning Castle Hill Basin, Canterbury NZ.
(1)

The Craigieburn Trails originated on the ground in 2010 when the Hogs Back Track, an intermediate, mixed-use, mountain-bike trail, was constructed by volunteers to link Castle Hill Village to the Cheeseman Ski Field Road in Canterbury, New Zealand. There are now more than 30km of sweet single-track in the Castle Hill Basin and through Craigieburn Forest Park through a wide variety of landscapes su

rrounded by stunning mountain scenery. The tracks are managed under the auspices of the Castle Hill Community Association in partnership with the Department of Conservation, and the community recognises the support of other organisations/companies such as Ground Effect Cycle Clothing, Fonterra Grass Roots Fund, Trail Fund NZ, T5 Contracting, etc.

All good things must come to an end. Frost heave is settling in, and the days aren't long enough to get things drying out.

All the open-country trails in the Craigieburn Trails - Castle Hill are now closed for Winter 2026.

Trail status has now been updated on both Trailforks, and the Craigieburn Trails website and apps.

This means the following tracks are now closed:
Hogs Back Track (including to the ๐ŸคฌSurron rider who rode up it while the trails team were doing maintenance at the weekend WTF?)
โ€ข Dracophyllum Flat
โ€ข Dicksons Downhill
โ€ข Cockayne Alley
โ€ข Bridge Hill
โ€ข Cuckoo Creek

This "summer" the ongoing theme is the Trails just not getting a chance to dry out, as evidenced by this TrailForks report. ๐Ÿ˜ข

Status: Significant Issue / Amber --- Condition: Prevalent Mud --- The lower third is a complete sh*tshow of mud. Doesnโ€™t look like it will dry out anytime soon. Cannot recommend a lap down Dicksons.

Dear Craigieburn Enduro entrants and supporters

It is with huge disappointment that the Gravity Canterbury Committee has had to make the difficult decision thatย The GC Craigieburn Enduro will not go ahead this Saturdayย the 17th of January.

The Craigieburn Forest Park and surrounding region has been subject to extreme and unseasonal weather over the last fortnight, resulting in highway closure, slips on the access road, tree damage and poor trail conditions. All the weather forecasts are predicting rainfall to continue through the rest of this week and into the weekend, coupled with very cold southerlies.

The two primary criteria we have used in coming to this decision are participant safety (both riders and supporters) and trail sustainability. In consultation with the race organising committee, the GC Safety team and the Craigieburn Trails association, our decision not to race this weekend has been made to ensure the safety of riders, volunteers and GC crew. Gravity Canterbury is also passionate about protecting the trail network to ensureย the Craigieburn Trails remain available to all well into the future.

We are liaising with the Department of Conservation, and assessing the gaps in the 2026 NZ MTB racing calendar, to identify possible postponement options. As most of you know, the race calendar is very full already. Please be patient while we work through this process.ย We expect to be able to provide another update by the end of the week.

We acknowledge that many of you have incurred travel costs to attend this event, and we apologise sincerely for the inconvenience this decision will have caused. Rest assured, this decision was not taken lightly. We will be making an announcement regarding refunds shortly and we ask for your understanding and patience as we work through this detail and process.

Please donโ€™t hesitate to get in touch if you have any specific questions or concerns and keep an eye on your inbox and our socials for updates.

Thanks for your ongoing support and understanding

Okay, so we had extreme fire danger last weekend, extreme rainfall forecast (potentially over 2 months of rain in a couple of days) for this weekend. ๐ŸŒง๏ธ๐ŸŒง๏ธ๐ŸŒง๏ธ
This weekend (17/18 Jan) is not one for riding bikes at Castle Hill as the track surfaces won't tolerate it. Please stay home or feel free to ride your bikes in the rain somewhere else.
There'll be plenty of summer left after. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Extreme fire danger this weekend. No fires, no fireworks etc. ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ

This weekend is set to be a scorcher! ๐ŸŒž๐Ÿ’จ

That comes with Extreme Fire Danger though. So to ensure everyone is safe over the weekend we are suspending all active fire permits from 11:59pm Friday 9th January until 08:00 Monday 12th January.

We are encouraging everyone to do the following over the weekend:
โŒ Do not light any fires during this time.
๐Ÿ•ตCheck on any previous burn piles - even if they are over a week old
๐ŸŒพPeople should be careful carrying out any hot works, or works that cause sparks, including mowing lawns in the cooler parts of the day like the early morning (sorry neighbours)
๐Ÿ”ฅIf you see any smoke or flames, call 111 immediately!

We are still in a Restricted Fire Season, so if you are planning to light a fire after this weekend go to www.checkitsalright.nz and apply for a permit. All permits that were suspended will be active again after 08:00am Monday 12th January.
