The stage was set for Velo Femme's grand finale Dynamo teams race in Tokoroa this week.

This was to be Barbara and Kay's last ride for the team, but unfortunately Barb couldn't make it in the end. Claire also had prior arrangements and couldn't attend (sensible given her efforts at the T42 MTB race the day before!). Sandy, Jo and Kellie had also come fresh from the T42 MTB race in National Park with sore, tired legs. Jo was still a tad ‘ginger’ from the T42 after party and Kellie accidently left her shoes in the wrong car (technically not forgotten). She quietly sighed with relief when she realised she'd be team photographer for the day instead... Sandy made it her mission to find some spare shoes so Kellie wouldn't be let off the hook so easily! Shoes were found (thanks to Rachel from the Toot team) then it was all hands on deck to change pedals and cleats to make them work in time.

The race started with a neutral section to get past some fresh gravel then it was into the hills. The course included 2 loops of the forestry road with a fair bit of rolling climb and an epic decent into more rolling hills to the finish line. Kay and Glenda were first to take off on their own, with Kellie putting in a last ditch attempt to hang on before riding with the girls to the finish line. Arguably the point of this ride was not to race, but just to finish together at Twisted Wheels pace. And what a glorious day for a ride it was, with lots of laughs along the way. Especially when Glenda narrowly escaped giving the Cat 2 boys an eyeful as she stripped off some extra layers 😳 🤣 ....Kay, Kellie and Glenda worked together to make Kay's last Velo Femme ride one of the best rides ever, before she heads off to Boulder Colorado in August. For these girls today was all about the team... until the last 20m of course 😜

Meanwhile Jo, Sandy and Amanda were definitely there to RACE the last race. Sandy (also on tired T42 legs) was dropped at 7km in, then rode almost 30km on her own, picking up a few PRs along the way, before catching a couple of other riders. Unfortunately she made a wrong turn and after 5km realised she was going the wrong way. She ended up taking a short cut turning onto the State Highway then successfully rode over the finish line, without anyone even noticing! Jo was dropped at 14km as the bunch attacked aggressively from the front. She worked with a couple of other riders until her T42 leg fatigue set in and was dropped again on the next steep climb. She was then picked up by Amanda and few others who pulled her along to the finish line.

There were apparently a few crashes out on the course but thankfully everyone from our team made it in safely for the free sausages and drinks put on by Dynamo and co at the end. A big thank you to all our Velo Femme supporters and sponsors out there, we really appreciate your support and couldn’t do this without you.

Roll on next season! 💕 🚲 🌸

*****Race 5 Report*******

Race 5 is known as the mystery round due to the course being announced only a few days before race day. The weeks leading up to the race the gossip was flying around about the course's details; was it a flat circuit course, was it the Maungakawa climb or was it Scotsman Valley?

It was a moderately windy and grey day with a hint of sunshine. It was a great temperature for a long road race!

Starters for this race included Kellie, Glenda, Sandy, Amanda Jo and Claire.

The final course was an 80km (OMG, 20kms too far for most of the team) heading northeast towards Tauwhere, up Scotsman valley towards Walton taking in classic hills; Bell rd and Tahuroa Climb.

It was a decent-sized field of ladies, and the main bunch stayed nicely together until the Bell rd hill around 20kms in, like many times before Bell rd was the breakpoint for many riders. We were lucky that Amanda and Jo survived Bell rd's torture. Sandy and Claire just slipped away and did a mad chase to get back on, without success.

Claire managed to catch up with Jo to form a solid group of mostly masters' women which was very welcomed in the substantial headwind home. This bunch did spice up at the finish, with Jo putting in a considerable attack on another rider for the finish line, sadly to be pipped at the post.

Sandy tried to follow Jo/Claire's group but couldn't hold it on the next hill. Sandy thought she was on her own but managed to pick up two other riders, working together until the end. Sandy put her track sprint to fair use by shutting down an early finish line breakaway and then being the first over the line in her group.

Glenda and Kellie dropped at about 22-23km in and rode together picking up several Hire Ace girls as they went. At one point making up a small group of 5 riders. The headwinds were powerful coming home, and one by one the riders disappeared leaving Kellie and Glenda to cross the finish line side by side ❤❤❤❤

Amanda put in a stellar effort being the first VF home today, and she is getting stronger and stronger every race 💪

It was a killer ride.

Lastly, if you’re a masters women roadie and you’re interested in racing please reach out to us and we can point you in the right direction.

****WAIBOP TTT**** Now for something a bit different!

A bit weird separating our VF team to race against each other in the WBOP TTT Champs, but this day favoured the flats over the hills so this is one race where we were all keen to fight for a spot on the podium. Velo Femme really made the day ours with 2 out of the 3 masters women’s teams racing. Let’s call us VF1 including Glenda, Kay, Sandy and Kellie and VF2 in disguise as Morrinsville Wheelers including Claire, Jo, Barb and an honorary VF for the day; Carol. VF1 set off ahead of VF2 and VF2 tried to chase them down.
The course was the 40km Gordonton TT course which included twists and turns with every sort of wind you can get ...head winds and tail winds and cross winds to challenge our skills. VF1 had been practicing rotations to counter the effects of wind and it certainly seemed to pay dividends with VF1 coming in 2nd place with 1.12 behind HCCC’s hot time of 1.05, and VF2 came in a close 3rd with 1.14. A sterling effort from everyone involved and happy days!

********Race 3 Report*******

Back at one of our favourite courses at Ngaruawahia this time. The course was a punchy 49km loop also known as little Naki https://www.strava.com/routes/12886221

Ngaruawahia welcomed us with its own street side action with a P fuelled brawl accessorised by the local cops. Aside from that action, the day was beautifully sunny with a bit of wind.

The team was fired up and wanted to give it 110%. Kellie and Claire were hot off a climbing and descending camp, so they were keen to put what they learnt into practise.

This race the team started at the front which saw Barbera leading the group for the first 5 km. There were definitely some confused looking faces from the other teams seeing all of Velo Femme riders in the main bunch for a few jams.

As predicted the race blew apart on the infamous Glen Alton Wall at 26km. This set up a solid chase group, including Amanda, Jo and Claire and a few others riders. Multiple attacks along the flats near the finish made the way for Amanda and Claire rolled over the line together at the finish with Jo close behind.

Glenda had a strong ride but rode 30 km by herself after being left behind on an incline. Kellie was also hot on her heels having been squeezed out earlier to avoid hitting a traffic island in Huntly. Great ride by all. Those that rode last year all knocked time off in this ride, achieving some great PBs!

We had a lovely invite to the Men on Bikes/Store Rite Logistics beers and burgers post race bash! We were hosted to yummy venison buns and a full pre-brief on the race action.

There were a few (unrelated) crashes in this race, we want to wish all involved a safe recovery.

Lastly, if you’re a masters women roadie and you’re interested in racing please reach out to us and we can point you in the right direction.

Race 3 eve!

We are back in the saddle doing one of our favourite courses in Ngaruawahia tomorrow.

We all feared the legend of the Glen Alton wall, but we are looking forward to that lovely long downhill and flat finish.

It's not all road cycling in the Velo Femme team!

Today three current Velo Femme riders Claire Moava Sherrington Kellie Pearson and the lovely Robyn de Haas a past Velo Femme rider, stayed nice and dry to do some track racing at the Avantidrome. They completed at the The Ashes doing a Team Pursuit(TP) in a hot time of 4:03 (3 kms).

***RACE 2 REPORT***

Tokoroa turned on the fine weather for our race day; so while this township is known for needing arm and leg warmers, today there was oodles of bare skin to be seen and even some unshaven legs!

It was a good-sized field for the women’s open which comprised 69.5km and 519 m of climbing. A lot of the climbing happened in the latter part of the race on tired legs. A big bunch stayed together until 55km where riders started to drop off with the first 30 riders being only 4mins apart.

We played the joker for this race which put extra money (aka points) in the bank and thanked the First Credit Union, so the girls were ready to give 100% with extra interest.

Joanne Helen Miller and Claire Moava Sherrington plagued with respiratory challenges with spring, and it’s silly pollen! So a big shout for getting on top of their health challenges! Jo attacked every hill to stay with the bunch and was not going to let them get away until the final peak at the crest they just slipped away, but she managed to form a good chasing bunch only 10 sec behind the lead bunch! Jo nearly got dropped at the halfway point but was met by Claire and Sandy who pulled Jo back on, so Jo got a wee rest. 👊

Poor Sandy got cramp in her quad so was promptly dropped on one of the last hills then was joined by teammate Claire who came out of nowhere and joined a small group but unfortunately on the last hill just at the crest a little gap appeared and her teammate and a small group were gone. Sandy rode the last 10km on her own, catching the one rider that passed her, beating her on the sprint at the end. That’s our track sprinter!

Amanda Cathro, our newest recruit, had a solid day on the course, being up the front of the bunch earlier on. She's got the racing bug now!

Glenda was a diesel with her new Cervelo mean machine which was purchased off Velo Workshop one of our fine sponsors. This sweet machine-finished ahead of Hireace rider meanwhile Kellie ran out of go-go juice and promptly got dropped when trying to get her jelly beans out at 10km to go.

C. Kay Weaver was pleased as punch with her Lone Ranger efforts. Kay rode with Kellie for 10K and then rest was back cheered on by the support car and traffic management guys who were picking up signs and cones after she went by. Kay rode hard so they could get back home to HQ!

Kay and Sandy jointly shared our muppet of the day award. Kay’s story was embarrassingly falling off her bike waiting for the start, after seeing some Thermal Chemistry Limited between our Jo and the Men in Black’s team captain and almost taking out Glenda in her fall. Not be outdone Sandy who at the finish line struggled to talk and unclip at the same time taking a soft fall onto the grass.

We hope our Velo Femme adventures are inspiring other open and masters women to come racing. Do reach out to us if you have any questions!

Our next race is in Ngaruawahia on the 22nd of November. Practice ride anybody?

That came around quick!

Race 2 is this Sunday in Tokoroa, again we a fortunate to have a full team of ladies to tackle this beautiful course.

The course is 69.5km long with 519m of climbing. Myself, Kellie and Bara did a course reccie last Friday, and we do recommend to bring a few extra-warm clothes and be ready a few hills!

***EVENT ONE RACE REPORT***

What an abrupt start to the Dynamo race series with two races in one day; TTT and road race. The conditions were a lovely sunny day with a touch of wind.

The 41km TTT course was the most talked race among the team with all its lumps and bumps. Our combined riding ability kept us together, thanks to Barbara, Amanda and Glenda for pushing us home, Claire’s motivation, and for Kellie keeping us honest starting out! A race highlight was the exceptionally fast downhills.

The 55km road race had some impressive riding from the girls, with Sandy making a comeback, Jo for her gutsy riding style and last but not least our team captain Claire who is getting stronger ++ playing the super domestique in the closing kms.

In true Velo Femme style, our Camp Velo Femme at race HQ in the Open Women’s bubble was the simply best. Barbara had her awesome campervan set up with lashing of coffee and tea, and even a home baked cake! We also enjoyed Glenda’s and Amanda’s “recovery” devices .

Even with a gruelling day, all the girls still had smiles on their faces. The team topped the day off with spa & bubbles to celebrate “VF event 1 done!”

We want to thank all our sponsors for making this happen. Velo Workshop First Credit Union Thermal Chemistry Limited.
Two more special mentions; Russel for giving us some his time to coach us for the TTT, it made a big difference and also to the lovely Dianne & Craig Rodger for being the lead car for the open women race!

We hope our Velo Femme adventures are inspiring other open and masters women to come racing.

Our next race is in Tokoroa on the 18th of October. Practice ride anybody?
