You're in horse country. Expect horses.
Every morning, horses and riders cross local roads to the training tracks.
That’s nothing new.
What’s changed is the volume of traffic around them.
Between 4.30am and 10am, horses regularly cross Racecourse Road, Peake Road and Abergeldie Way at many different sites. If you’re driving through the area, please slow down, be prepared to stop, and give horses plenty of space.
Right now, that matters more than ever.
With increased traffic from the growing Hautapu industrial area, the temporary SH1 on-ramp closure roads around the Cambridge racecourse training precinct are busier than usual. Drivers may not realise they’re travelling through an area where horses are moving crossing the road between stables and the track every morning. Add fog, wet roads and reduced visibility, and it quickly becomes a dangerous mix.
Horses don’t react like cars. They can’t pull over or wait for traffic to pass. They need space, patience and predictable driving.
This has been part of the character of this area for generations. The horses were here long before the morning rush.
A bit of patience goes a long way in preventing a serious accident.
