Rowing Canada Aviron, British Rowing, Rowing Australia and Rowing NZ have today announced the One Minute Challenge, a joint initiative for indoor rowers across the respective nations.

To keep track of the results, participants will be asked to log their scores on a live, real-time web platform, then share their results and nominate friends on social media using . Taking place over the weekend of Friday 8 - Tuesday 12 May, the mass-participation competition challenges anyone with a rowing machine at home to see how far they can row in one minute. Members of the public will compete alongside rowers from each nation’s Olympic and Paralympic teams for individual awards in various age, weight and adaptive rowing categories, with international bragging rights also at stake for the country that records the furthest combined distance.

The web platform will be open for entries throughout this coming weekend, opening at 11:00 Friday 8 May and closing at 10.59 Tuesday 12 May NZST.

On today’s announcement, Rowing NZ Chief Executive Simon Peterson commented, “Our indoor rowing event launched today alongside Canada, Great Britain and Australia is a humbling reminder that New Zealand’s rowing community are not alone in our eagerness to get back out on the water, and highlights a great relationship that exists between our counterparts across the globe. These are challenging times but we remain impressed with not only our domestic rowing community, but also the global rowing community who continually seek the connection and comradery that comes with our sport.”

Please visit our website for more information on how to participate from Friday 8 May NZST.

Well done to all participants of the ANZAC challenge yesterday.
A perfect start to the day with so many people acknowledging the day by taking part in the stand at dawn.

Stay safe everyone!

The results are in for the inaugural Anzac Day Indoor Rowing Challenge - congratulations to all those who participated!

New Zealanders claimed the challenge this year, but the challenge’s purpose and yesterday’s efforts were first and foremost undertaken to honour our Anzac brothers and sisters – past and present.

Over the last 24 hours, the total number of participants across New Zealand and Australia was 1,500 - just 14% of the total number of Anzac lives estimated to have been lost during the Gallipoli campaign alone. The total distance recorded by both countries is 19,398 kms. This distance is roughly one and a half times the distance from Albany, Western Australia (where the ANZAC troops departed from in 1914) to Anzac Cove in Turkey.

Rowing Australia, Rowing NZ and Eric Murray would especially like to thank the Colgan Foundation for committing to donate $3,000 NZD to the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services Association (RSA) and $2,000 AUD to the RSL Australia ANZAC Appeal.

Hope you are all keeping safe in your bubbles.

FYI.

Rowing Australia, Rowing NZ and two-time Olympic gold medalist, Eric Murray, today announced the 2020 Anzac Day Indoor Rowing Challenge.

The event to take place from dawn to dusk on Saturday 25 April will see Australians and New Zealanders unite to record 2504 metres, as many times as possible, at home, on their indoor rowing machines.

Those who choose to take part in the event can log their metres between dawn and dusk with the country who recorded the most 2504m per participant to be announced on Sunday 26 April.

On the support of New Zealand and Australian representative athletes, Rowing NZ Chief Executive Simon Peterson commented, ‘’As with all New Zealanders and Australians, our athletes are facing challenging times, and we are incredibly proud of their commitment to honour Anzac Day within our respective lockdown restrictions."

"Whist we are saddened normal commemorations are unable to take place this year, we are humbled to have the New Zealand and Australian rowing communities joining us in honouring our Defence Forces.”

Please visit our website for more information on how to participate on Saturday 25 April.
