Saturday’s AGM and Prizegiving was a fantastic celebration of another successful and memorable season at Cambridge Bowling Club.

A sincere thank you goes out to our Board, Committees, volunteers, kitchen helpers, greenkeepers, bar staff, and everyone who contributes behind the scenes throughout the year. Your dedication is the backbone of the Club and makes everything we enjoy together possible.

There were no changes to officer or helper positions this year, providing excellent stability and continuity as we move confidently into the new season. The Tournament Committee also warmly welcomed Roslyn Brown as its newest member — a great addition to the team.

While President Alan is currently enjoying a well-earned holiday, members took the opportunity to acknowledge and appreciate his leadership, commitment, and ongoing support throughout the season.

Absent award winners — Robyn Smith, Bev Simpson, and Neil Paterson. While you weren’t able to be there on the day, your achievements were very much celebrated and recognised. With today’s AI and photo tech, we made sure no one was left out of the memories, and your presence was still proudly included in our event highlights

Special thanks were also extended to Past Presidents Don Harris and Peter Hand, Patron Ian Rogers, and all members who contributed delicious shared plates, adding to the friendly and community-driven spirit of the day.

Congratulations to Our 2025–26 Champions

Lawn Bowls Royalty visits Cambridge Bowling Club

When Selina Goddard visited our Club recently, she was accompanied by a representative from the New Zealand Olympic Committee. At that time Selina told us she was hoping to be selected in the 12 strong Lawn Bowls team to represent New Zealand at the Commonwealth Games. Now that appointment has been confirmed, we congratulate 31-year-old Selina on her selection. Selina visited as part of an advertising film session for Flex Fitness New Zealand, which has a great gym in Cambridge. Their two super-fit representatives also feature in our photos.

Cambridge Bowling Club Board members, Peter Hand and Margaret Stott, hosted the group, including providing them with a batch of welcome fresh scones – offering our well renowned Cambridge Bowling Club hospitality.

We wish Selina well in her professed endeavour to gain a Gold Medal for New Zealand in July/August. After all, Selina already has consecutive Bronze Medals and now wants the shinier one. Go Selina!

Northern vs Southern Hemisphere

Lost in the archives for a number of years, the Northern vs Southern Hemisphere trophy was resurrected recently. First competed for 22 years ago, the trophy was donated by Foil EMI Etching and Design, 54 Duke Street, and Cambridge Glass Boutique.

This year 24 players fronted up to vie for bragging rights for what was mooted as “country of origin”. As it turned out, the numbers of the players’ birth country tipped in the balance of the Southern Hemisphere, so the Northerners had to rely a little on their extended family ties to make the teams equal. Go grandma!

Banter was to the fore, and bowling shots oft times had their bowlers being knighted or beheaded as the case may be!

As our photos attest, this year the Northerners prevailed – Congratulations

Waikato Champion of Champion Runner’s Up

CONGRATULATIONS to the Cambridge Bowling Club Women’s 4’s team, comprising Roslyn Brown, Bev Simpson, Maureen Field and Helen Kay, who worked through a field of top Waikato players on Saturday to make the final which was held on Sunday 24 May at Putaruru. Our ladies did their best against the strong Hinuera team, which also had another of our club members, Heather Davison, as their lead.

Although this was not to be Cambridge’s day, the girls kept their composure and put in some great shots. We are very proud of you all for achieving the runner up position in the Waikato Champion of Champions.

Myers Trophy 2026

There has been a Waipa division of Bowls Waikato since 1994, before which there was a Central Zone competition. Originally, the competition comprised only the men’s and junior division. However, in 2002 the women requested a division of their own and the Hastie Trophy became a much sought-after prize.

The Myers Trophy was established in the late 1980’s and has been hotly contested by Waipa teams since then. On Sunday 17 May it was the turn of Cambridge Bowling Club to host the Myers’ tournament, when teams of 5 (pairs and threes) from Te Kuiti, Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Raglan, Pirongia, Kihikihi, Otorohanga, and Cambridge Central enjoyed a wonderful sunny Autumn Day of competition.
The top three teams were:
Central Cambridge
Kihikihi
Cambridge
Bowls Waikato will be super proud of the talent and enthusiasm featured at this Junior tournament, when competitors aged from 13, to great-grandparents, who are not letting on their age, competed on a level playing field.

Hastie Trophy.
Our five Cambridge Bowling Club ladies had a great day contesting the Hastie Trophy in Raglan. They won 3 of their games, with Te Awamutu winning the trophy.

Resthaven Classic 2026

Thanks to the generosity of Resthaven, the classic held 12-13 May was a great success. 20 teams competed in lovely sunny conditions, with the first 6 places heading for the ballooned prize podium.

We were delighted to have Resthaven’s CEO Michael, as well as Jeff, the Independent Living Manager, present to enjoy the bowls and present the prizes. The added pleasure of seeing the lovely children made us smile.

Club members excelled with their organization and hospitality as well as fielding 2 teams of competitors. Bill's team, comprising Brian Walton, Deb Robinson, and Maureen Field were thrilled with their 6th place against some top Waikato players.

The top six teams were as follows:

1. Composite: – Tina, Glenda, Lynda, Michelle

2. Frankton Junction: - Mike, Laurie, Larry, Grant

3. Frankton Junction: - Mort, Steve, Tony, Eddie

4. Tokoroa: - Kath, Gary, Judy, Maia

5. Kerepehi: - Don, Lorraine, Jill, Tracey

6. Cambridge: - Bill, Brian, Deb, Maureen
