⭐️Brilliant filly Well Written claims TAB slot for The NZB Kiwi ⭐️

New Zealand racing’s hottest property, Well Written (AUS) (Written Tycoon), is locked in for the $4m The NZB Kiwi (1500m), after connections of the unbeaten filly signed up for the TAB slot, held by Entain New Zealand.

The daughter of Written Tycoon has won all three of her career starts in dominant fashion, topped off by her $600,000 Group 1 Barneswood Farm 53rd New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m) victory at Riccarton Park last month.

The Cambridge-based filly will now be set for the Southern Hemisphere's richest three-year-old race on 7 March 2026 at Ellerslie, with lead-up runs planned on Boxing Day and in the TAB Karaka Millions 3YO (1600m) in January, before The NZB Kiwi.

Entain Australia and New Zealand CEO Andrew Vouris was thrilled that Well Written’s connections had chosen the TAB slot for her bid to become the winner of the second running of The NZB Kiwi.

“Well Written has already stamped herself as a brilliant talent and has gained a following on both sides of the Tasman,” Vouris said.

“Through our broadcasting, content and wagering teams, we can’t wait to introduce her to an even bigger audience across Australasia, with an incredibly bright future ahead of her," he said.

Well Written’s trainer Stephen Marsh said the Entain team had built a comprehensive plan to elevate the interest around the race, and around Well Written.

“Entain really impressed us with the scope of what they can bring to the partnership, and as someone who grew up in the New Zealand racing industry, it feels right to link up with the iconic TAB brand for this massive race,” Marsh said.

“Well Written has already taken her band of supporters on an amazing journey, and we’re sure it will go to the next level with Entain’s support.”

Major Australian breeding operation Yulong Investments purchased 50% of Well Written prior to her 1000 Guineas win. Other notable horses to wear the Yulong colours include dual Cox Plate winner Via Sistina and four-time Group 1-winning mare Treasurethe Moment.

Yulong Investment’s Racing Manager Troy Stephens said it is incredibly exciting for Yulong to be involved in the 2026 edition of The NZB Kiwi.

“It is a race that has captured the attention of the New Zealand industry, so to be involved with a filly of Well Written’s calibre to represent Yulong is a great thrill for us,” Stephens said.

“We look forward to working alongside the Entain team and Marsh Racing in the lead-up to the race. New Zealand has such a rich racing history, and we are proud to now be part of that landscape - it is a very exciting time for Yulong.”

As the winner of the Group 1 Barneswood Farm 53rd 1000 Guineas, Well Written is eligible for a share of the $1 million NZB Kiwi Bonus Pool, up for grabs for horses that place in the top three in The NZB Kiwi.

Well Written was purchased by Stephen Marsh Racing and Dylan Johnson Bloodstock from Brighthill Farm for $80,000 at New Zealand Bloodstock's 2024 National Online Yearling Sale on Gavelhouse Plus.

⭐️Well Written bursts into Guineas contention⭐️

The Gr.3 Sunline Vase (1400m) was expected to be the weekend’s key pointer for the Gr.1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m), but a spectacular performance on the Ellerslie undercard had its own impact on fixed-odds betting for the Christchurch classic.

First-starter Well Written blitzed a highly rated maiden field by three lengths in Saturday’s Join TAB Racing Club (1200m). The TAB immediately slashed her from $61 into $14 for the 1000 Guineas at Riccarton on November 8.

“We’ve always rated her highly and made the next payment for the 1000 Guineas even though she was unraced at the time,” trainer Stephen Marsh said. “We’ll have to look at the Soliloquy Stakes (Gr.2, 1400m) now and maybe even get her down south. She looks top-drawer.”

Well Written is by Written Tycoon out of the Sebring mare Mozzie Monster, who placed in the Listed Jim Moloney Stakes (1400m) and Bendigo Guineas (1400m). The talented filly won both of her trials as an autumn two-year-old, then built into her new campaign with a third in an Avondale trial on August 12 and a win at Ellerslie on September 9.

Sent out as a $6.50 third favourite among a highly competitive line-up on Saturday, Well Written began only fairly from her wide gate but quickly recovered and moved into sixth and one off the rail for jockey Matt Cartwright.

The speed came out of the race down the side of the track and the field bunched right up, prompting Cartwright to hook to the outside and get Well Written up and rolling with 600m still to run.

Well Written dashed to the lead at the 300m mark and soon drew clear despite gawking around for most of the home straight. She beat Navy Ensign by three lengths, with another length and a quarter back to Argo and Avantaggia.

“She’s got a lot of ability,” Cartwright said. “She jumped awkwardly, but then we ended up getting a lovely run. They went awfully slow, so I had to keep her in rhythm and get her out and give her every chance.

“She quickened up very well. She was green late, but she’s a good horse. She definitely has black type in her future.”

Well Written was offered by Brighthill Farm in the 2024 NZB National Online Yearling Sale on Gavelhouse Plus, where Stephen Marsh Racing and Dylan Johnson Bloodstock bought her for a sale-topping $80,000.

“She’s a beautiful filly,” Marsh said. “I was hoping for a good draw today, but when the gates came out and she’d drawn 10, I thought, ‘Jeez, that’s par for the course with how we’re going at the moment.’

“But she was brilliant. Matt gave her a beautiful ride and got her one off. He had to get out and get going a bit early, he didn’t want to be caught in a pocket. Matt’s liked this filly for a very long time and she’s shown today that she’s a good horse.

“We bought her online. We’ve got a lot of good stable clients in the ownership, and some new clients as well. It’s great.”

Great to be part of the Iconic Star story. Purchased in conjunction with Marsh Racing 12 months ago it was a huge thrill to reward her owners this week with a sale 3 times that of her purchase price.

ICONIC STAR CONFIRMS BRISBANE ASSIGNMENT

Quality sprinting mare Iconic Star (Brazen Beau) will be on a one-way trip to Brisbane after securing her eighth career victory and second for her trainer Stephen Marsh when promoted to outright first in the enquiry room following the running of race two on Saturday.

“Dylan Johnson and I purchased Iconic Star last June with the idea of trying to get some black type with her in New Zealand before sending her back to the Gold Coast broodmare sale this year,” he said.

“She has done us proud with two placings at Group Three level (Gp3 Concord Hcp & Gp3 King’s Plate) and on Saturday she got her second win for us from just seven starts.

“She actually dead-heated for first with Letzbeglam, but we fired in a protest as the other mare lay in on her over the last 100m, the JCA saw it our way and she was promoted to solo first.

“She is on the plane with our other horses to Brisbane and will also have a run over there on the 14th (L. Magic Millions Bright Shadow) before we take her to the broodmare sale ten days later.

Iconic Star was a A$60,000 purchase from the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale and will be re-offered to the market on Tuesday 24th May. She is catalogued as lot 653 in the 2022 National Broodmare Sale - NZ Racing Desk
