So bu**er it ! we’ve had to make the call along with so many other events, to postpone the Gumboot Friday 12 hour ride at the Avantidrome next Friday. Obviously we still don’t know what level or traffic light we’ll be at next week. Even if we are good to go after next Monday’s announcement there are quite a lot of people who needed to update their accreditation to be able to ride, and haven’t been allowed to do so. So we’ll try to find a new date possibly in February 2022 along with the other 637 other events lines up for then! Stay tuned and watch this space. In the meantime stay healthy and happy !

Gumboot Friday at the Avantidrome Update

Just 4 weeks to go until Gumboot Friday November the 5th and it’s all coming together. In case this is the first time you’ve heard about this, we’re planning a bike-a-thon for 12 hours at the Avantidrome, raising some money for funding for counselling for our youth.
Check out the earlier posts on this page for more details.

We’ve put together an entry form for you to register to ride :

https://www.sporty.co.nz/viewform/185689

If you can fill that out and put your entry fee directly onto the givealittle page.

https://givealittle.co.nz/fundraiser/gumboot-up-nz-get-on-your-bike-and-ride

It is minimum $10 donation to ride – all good if you feel you’d like to contribute a bit more ! All funds are going straight to The Key to Life Charitable Trust. If you’d like to get friends or family sponsoring or donating that would be awesome. Please put your name on the Givealittle page so we can check who’s paid.

The time slots in the entry form are not set in concrete – it’s just to give us an indication of numbers through the day. We would like to have a minimum of 10 on the track at any one time and we have an upper limit of 24. At busy times we will be encouraging people to come on and off the track to get everyone a decent ride. For those contemplating doing a 12 hour ride we’ll do our best to give you as much track time as possible.

Getting track accredited to ride :

To ride on the Avantidrome for Gumboot Friday you will need to be accredited!
1. For those of you who are already accredited and ride regularly on the track then you have nothing to worry about!!
2. If you have been accredited but haven’t been on the track for more than 12 months then you’ll need a “refresher”. This can be done by:-
a. Attending an M4 Accreditation session (there’s one on Saturday 23rd October at 10:30am)
b. Attend the Fitness Level 1 session on Tuesdays at 6:00pm (you only have to attend once)
c. Attend the Express Accreditation session on Sunday 31st October at 5:30pm
3. If you have never been accredited then you’ll need to complete our modules: -
a. M1 session – Intro --- Saturday 16th October at 08:30am
b. M2 session – Riding at a safe speed --- Saturday 16th October at 10:30am
c. M3 session – Riding in a group --- Saturday 23rd October at 08:30am
d. M4 session – Track fitness & skills --- Saturday 23rd October at 10:30am
4. If you competed at the Corporate Challenge this year (2021) then you are welcome to attend the Express Accreditation session on Sunday 31st October to complete your Accreditation!

For any of these sessions you’ll need to book in to secure your spot – call our reception team on 07 823 1421 and they can lock you in!

How about getting roadies involved?

The roadies have told us they have a bad case of FOMO and want to be involved. So Spoken Cycles have kindly offered to turn their usual Friday morning coffee roll into the Spoken Gumboot Friday coffee and breakfast roll. Meet at 6am on Friday Nov 5th at Spoken to do a 30km bunch roll, finishing at the Bikery for coffee or breakfast at 7am.

Breakfast at the Bikery

The day will kick off with a hearty breakfast at the Bikery café from 7am. Roadies and trackies can come together and carbo load. Closer to the day we will post the menu on the page and ask you to pre-order so that the café knows how many we are catering for. More on that later.

How many laps have we done?

We are working on having an electronic system in place so that we can track each individual’s laps and also how many in total the group has done.

Community Supper

We will be finishing at 8pm and would love people to stay on and enjoy some good company and share a pot luck picnic in the infield. Bring something to share and celebrate what we have achieved. The only stipulation is no glass allowed in the infield.

Spread the word and let’s get involved. It’s going to be a lot of fun, a lot of laughs and it’s all for a great cause.

Get on your bike !

How many laps can YOU do ?

Sorry all I’m not very good at this Facebook stuff. Somehow it has said that it is an online event. Which is not the case - we’d love to see you in person at the Avantidrome with your bike. Or just come and have a look and a laugh and cheer us on.
Cheers.

GUMBOOT UP NZ

By Marc Gascoigne aka Gumboot

There are three things I’m passionate about in life. Wearing gumboots, improving mental health and riding my bike. Well ok, there’s a few other things… beer, coffee, donuts and I quite like my family… not necessarily in that order!

So when I had the pleasure of meeting Mike King in August and he challenged me to get involved in Gumboot Friday and organise a fundraiser at “that big bike shed down your way in Cambridge,” I thought, why the hell not?

What are we proposing?
On Friday the 5th of November the TA Sports Cycling Club in association with the Home of Cycling will host a 12-hour Ride-a-thon, from 8am to 8pm. It will be an open roll for accredited riders – come and ride as many or as few laps as you want. We are hoping to always have a minimum of 10 riders on the track, with a maximum of 24 at any one time. There will be plenty of opportunity to come on and off the track and share the workload with the aim being to smash out a massive number of total laps in the 12 hours.

What’s the point in doing that?
It has been a hell of a year for many in the cycling community. For some, the mental health challenges have been huge. This is an opportunity to come together and connect, to raise awareness of how challenging life and sport can be, and to raise some money for Gumboot Friday which funds counselling for our youth. 100% of the funds raised will go into counselling. Many people say they feel helpless when their friends and colleagues are struggling – well here’s your opportunity to do something about it and show how much you care!

Do I have to fundraise?
No. It is as much about getting together, having a yarn and doing a ride. If you want to come down and smash out a training session, all good. It will be $10 per rider for as long as you want (numbers allowing). Or if you’d like to get some mates sponsoring you $ per lap that would be awesome. The Givealittle Page is https://givealittle.co.nz/fundraiser/gumboot-up-nz-get-on-your-bike-and-ride
How many laps / km can you ride in 12 hours?

Is anyone up for 1000 laps? The $10 rider fee will go to Gumboot Friday. Massive thanks to the Home of Cycling for providing this world class facility at no charge.

What now?
Plans for the big day are still in the development stage but we have a page set up at https://www.facebook.com/Gumboot-Up-NZ-get-on-your-bike-and-RIDE-102699475503706
Make sure you check it out and give it a “like” to keep informed of the details. It would be great if you could also spread the word and encourage others to like the page, get involved and come along on the day. It’s going to be an epic, so lock it into your diary.

I reckon this definitely qualifies as a “mental health” day off but if you have to front up to work on the 5th of November, why not swing into the Avantidrome as soon as you’ve clocked off and join the fun? We’ll even try and save some donuts and coffee for ya and perhaps some beer once we’re done!

Bonus points if you’re wearing your (clean) gumboots in the infield!
