Day 18 - day 21 done!
Day 18 was Nelson to Tapawera. Cynthia officially arrived for day 18! The Belles started off the day following the Tasmans Great Taste Trail. The big feature of the trail was the 1.35km long tunnel that had been unused for 60 years and had only opened back up 5 years ago specifically for the TA. They finished off the day with some blue cod and catch-ups with other TA riders!
Day 19 was Tapawera to Murchison. This was the first morning the Belles really had to layer up in the cold. The long fingered gloves even got pulled out! Cycling this day with some of their TA friends who they have met along they way, they had to battle their way through bumble bees and sand flies. The highlight of this day was Lake Rotoroa. This Lake was formed from glacial carving during the last age. It took the Belles breath away! They finished the night with a beer in hand, surrounded by other TA cyclists doing this crazy adventure as well!
Day 20 was Murchison to Reefton. This was a big day; 3 bee stings, 2 huge saddles and 1 life lesson of never letting go of the rear brake while still gripping tightly onto the front brake. Luckily Liz won’t be doing that again any time soon, the dent in her helmet will remind her of that! The ride wound through the beautiful Beech Forrest’s and finished up in the incredible Reefton where the Belles explored and taste tested at the Gin Distillery. When in Reefton right?
Day 21 was Reefton to Greymouth. With a late start on the cards, the Belles took in the beautiful atmosphere of the church they were staying in. They also had a change of plan and took a different route as the big river trail was closed. To add to the challenges of the day, they got a second flat tyre and had to fix it on the fly! Luckily they finished the night with a fantastic dinner with friends and are excited to have one week to go!
Check out the MeloYelo ebikes going strong! Getting the Belles through the toughest of climbs and rockiest of gravel.

Day 15, 16 and 17 âś… (they are officially in the South Island!)
Day 15 was Pahiatua to Martinborough. The highlight for this ride was cycling through Eketahuna and seeing the famous Kiwi. This white kiwi was painted in honour of the famous white kiwi born at the Mount Bruce Wildlife Sanctuary down the road. Not only does Eketahuna have the famous Kiwi, the Belles also loved seeing llama and sheep hanging out in peoples front lawns, summing up how wonderful this town was. The MeloYelo ebikes are holding up well so far on the trip and the Belles are loving how easy they are to clean and maintain!
Day 16 was Martinborough to Wellington. This was the first cold day the Belles have experienced so far or as they said “freezing their t**s off”. This ride was a straight forward track until they got to the base of the Remutakas; a 350 meter climb over 10km that started with a single (goat) track of 2km. Liz and Martha are both rock stars at these things now aided by a huge sugar input before starting it. The track consisted of four tunnels and a huge swing bridge!!
The Rimutaka Railway travels gently uphill on the Upper Hutt side to the Summit Tunnel, the
longest of four tunnels at just under 600 metres long, though they felt a lot longer. The Belles also caught up with Emma and Ben from MeloYelo who tended to the bikes and gave the ladies new brakes and chains. Thank you for the incredible customer support! The Belles also farewelled The Roadie (Terry) who has travelled back to Auckland for work. The Belles finished the day at the bottom of the North Island!!! Half way done, one island to go!
Day 17 was Wellington to Nelson. The freezing your t**s off theme continued on the 2.30am ferry to Picton. Tina covered herself in news paper to sleep. Liz succumbed to the Disney channel room in search of warm and the ever tenacious Martha toughed it out. No cycling today as repairs needed for the Bikes so visit to MeloYelo agent Gary in Havelock. All sorted and ready to roll! The day consisted of a lovely breakfast, spontaneous shopping and an afternoon in the sun by the pool!
The Belles are officially on the home stretch!

The Belles arrived in Wellington and were greeted by the amazing Emma from MeloYelo. She is apart of the wonderfully supportive MeloYelo team and met the Belles in Wellington to look over their bikes before the second half of the trip. Emma and her able assistant Ben administered to all 3 bikes giving them new brakes and chains, leaving them looking as good as new. She had several bikes on display for trial runs and the Belles were able to talk to interested people about their experiences with them. Emma farewelled the Belles knowing their bikes were serviced and in good shape for the South Island leg of the TA. Thanks Emma and Ben for being our personal trail angels! The MeloYelo bikes and team are making this adventure one of a kind!

The Belles have officially made it to the South Island. They are over half way through country and looking as gorgeous as ever! Don’t we all wish we could look this good after more than 1500kms on a bike. Not long to go until Bluff! Here they are catching up with West End Rowing teammates in Havelock.

Day 12, 13 and 14 are all done and dusted!!
Day 12 was Whanganui to Hunterville. The Belles enjoyed being close to the water during this ride through Whanganui. There was a lot of railway cycling and battling through gravel. The Belles battled up Durie Hill elevator lookout and got some amazing views! They wrapped up the day with a drink at the amazing Station Hotel accommodation with plenty of other TA riders and caught up with old friends!
Day 13 was Hunterville to Makoura Lodge. This was a huge climbing day, over 1,100meters in total, lucky they had a lots of support from the hundreds of cows along the way. There was many “Tour Angels” along the way, supplying food and water for all the riders. What an incredibly amount generosity! Luckily there was plenty of shade to catch up with the other riders along the way but Liz got taken out during the ride. She put up a fight but in the end, the bee won, ending up with a gnarly sting on the forehead.
Day 14 was Makoura Lodge to Pahiatua. Liz took a rest day as there was some swelling after the fight with the bee… you should see the other guy. Lovely ride though, thankfully no where near as much climbing today but still worked hard. The Belles are loving the journey though and are really determined for the rest of the trip. Very grateful for their MeloYelo bikes! Making this trip such a great adventure!
Some exciting news coming tomorrow about .lund. Keep your eyes peeled!

The Belles are officially past the 1/3 mark! Day 9, 10 and 11 âś…
Day 9 was the Black Fern Lodge to Taumaranui aka the second half of the timber trail. This ride was full of history about the men and women who came before us while being surrounded by amazing scenery. The Ongarue Spiral took their breath away. The tunnel, hand hewn through pumice and gnimbrite rock, completes a fantastic circle that provided a cunning solution to developing a gradient shallow enough for trams loaded with felled trees and now, tired Tour riders. The day was finished off by a police es**rt as they arrived into Taumarnui, treating them like the royalty they are đź‘‘!
Day 10 was Taumaranui to Raetihi. A beautiful ride to give the Belles a bit of a rest after the treacherous timber trail, although they had to take an alternate route as the original one was not safe enough. The feeling of being in a mountain town brought a sense of calmness to the Belles and they truly loved the gem that Raetihi truly is!
Day 11 was Raetihi to Pipiriki to Wanganui. This ride has been Liz’s favourite so far!
The beautiful countryside took their breath away and made the ride so enjoyable. They rode to Pipiriki to catch back up with the trail and finished with, what they called, an easy 77km ride along Wanganui river. This ride brought pure delight to the trip and they are so excited for the next coming days!

What an amazing group of women to celebrate today. Happy international womens day! These ladies are going strong on their massive adventure, nearing close to halfway done.
We would like to shout out all the women that got us here.
