Capoeira gives us so many opportunities to expand our minds, our knowledge, and our understanding far beyond what we sometimes imagine.

I had the privilege of visiting Professor MarceloCoach Filgueiras and his Resistência group in Hamilton. What an amazing group! It was so good to see you all again, and also fantastic to meet some new faces.

I hope everyone enjoyed the training session as much as I did.

One of the amazing things about a Roda is its structure.

To truly understand it, you need to experience it from the very beginning to the very end.

The orchestra comes together, the instruments begin playing one by one, the singing follows, then comes the beginning of the game, and from there, the Roda continues to unfold.

Every part has meaning. Every part has a place.

This is one of the reasons we’re so excited about our upcoming event in October. Not simply because it’s going to be a lot of fun, but because it’s also something very important to us.

Capoeira is not just a martial art.
It’s not just music.
It’s not just a game.
It goes much deeper than that.

And this October, Marlborough will have the opportunity to experience our culture, Capoeira culture, firsthand, right here in Blenheim.

We’re so happy to announce Felipe “Baiano” as part of Axé na Ilha do Sul 2026!

Originally from Bahia, Brazil, Felipe has called New Zealand home for many years and is now based right here in Marlborough!

Felipe’s Capoeira roots come through the school of Mestre Itapoan, one of the important students of the legendary Mestre Bimba, connecting him directly to a rich tradition of Capoeira Regional and Bahian culture.

And this October, Felipe is bringing a little piece of Bahia to our Capoeira event! 🇧🇷

Felipe will be teaching a Samba de Roda workshop!

If you know Felipe, you already know, when he’s around, you’re going to have a good time! A charismatic and talented musician with plenty of energy, rhythm and Brazilian spirit, we’re very happy to have him joining us for the weekend.

Get ready to move, learn, laugh and experience some Samba de Roda!

Professor Carcará is coming to Axé na Ilha do Sul!
We're really happy to have Professor Carcará, from Espaço Cultural Aotea-Aruandê (Wanaka), joining us in Marlborough this October.
Originally from Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Professor Carcará is a disciple of Mestre Pop and has been living in New Zealand for the past 6½ years, four years in Gisborne and the last two and a half in Wanaka, where he's been growing and sharing his Capoeira.
It's always good to bring together people from different corners of the country to train, exchange experiences, and strengthen our Capoeira community.
Thank you for making the trip to Marlborough, Professor. We look forward to sharing a great weekend of training, music, and rodas with you.

One of the true OGs!
Nathan Pflaum Instrutor Parrudo has been around since the early days and has built up many years of experience and knowledge in Capoeira. His journey has taken him around the world, training, playing and creating strong connections with Capoeiristas wherever he has travelled or lived.

He has a beautiful game and plenty of knowledge to share, and you can see the years of experience every time he steps into the roda. A true man of the world, with Capoeira being a big part of his journey along the way.

He is simply a great guy, the kind of person who, when needed, will go above and beyond for others. He has even been called a hero on more than one occasion!

We are really happy to know that Instrutor Parrudo will be coming to Marlborough this October to join us for Axé na Ilha do Sul!

It’s going to be great to have you with us, Parrudo!

Thank you to everyone who trained hard with us this term at MGC! It's been awesome to see new members joining our Capoeira family, and every one of you is moving in the right direction towards your next grading. Keep showing up, stay consistent, and trust the process.

A special thank you to the one and only Monitor Biriba.

Rain or shine, hot or cold, summer or winter... he's always there. Monitor Biriba is a true example of what commitment looks like, and we have so much respect and appreciation for his dedication, discipline, and work ethic.

Thank you, João Corbett for your camaraderie, encouragement, and for always bringing great energy to every training session. We can't wait to train with you again in Term 3!

Ladies and gentlemen… The Queen of Handstands! 🤸‍♀️
We are really excited to announce that Professora Bandida will be joining us at Axé na Ilha do Sul 2026!

For many years, Professora Bandida has been one of the most important members of Capoeira Resistência, supporting and helping our group grow since the very first days of Mestre Bira's journey in Wellington, New Zealand.

She is the kind of capoeirista who is always keen to be involved in anything related to Capoeira. Whether it's training, teaching, travelling, or stepping into the roda, she brings great energy and commitment wherever she goes.

If you've ever seen her in a roda or during training, you'll know exactly why she earned her nickname. Her handstands are legendary, her energy is contagious, and her passion for Capoeira inspires everyone around her.
