Waikakaho Tiny Trotters Club

Waikakaho Tiny Trotters Club Our toddler-focused sessions are all about confidence, fun, and connection with ponies in a calm, supportive environment.

Children learn balance, basic riding skills, and horse awareness through play-based activities designed just for preschoolers (2-5yr)

Lessons will still be running as normal with the public holiday tomorrow. Look forward to another great afternoon of riding! ☺️

A note for those attending lessons- there are significant delays at springcreek due to stop go road works on the state highway, please factor this into your journey the best you can. There is an alternate option of coming from the Renwick side, but please note that the road is gravel for part of the way from that direction.
Thanks!

🌿 Tiny Trotters Update 🌿

Thank you so much for the amazing interest in our toddler riding lessons this term 🤍
All spaces are currently full.

If you’d like to be added to the waitlist, please send me a message and I’ll get in touch if a spot becomes available.

I also just wanted to say thank you for your patience with replies. I’m juggling Tiny Trotters alongside two young children and a part-time job, so I may not always be able to respond instantly. I completely understand that waiting for a reply can be frustrating at times, but please know I always do my best to get back to everyone as soon as I can.

Thank you for your understanding and support — it really means a lot 🐴✨

✨ We’ve Rebranded! ✨

Waikakaho Riding School has grown and evolved, and we’re excited to officially introduce our new name:

💙🌸 Waikakaho Tiny Trotters Club 🌸💙

As our much-loved big horses have now retired, we’ve made the decision to focus solely on what we do best — gentle, fun, confidence-building horse experiences for toddlers aged 2–5 years.

Tiny Trotters Club is all about:
🐎 First pony rides
🌱 Building confidence & coordination
💗 Learning through play
🤍 Calm, kind ponies and small groups

While the name has changed, the heart of what we do hasn’t — a safe, nurturing environment where little riders can grow, learn, and fall in love with horses.

Thank you to all our wonderful families for your continued support. We can’t wait to welcome both familiar and new faces to this next chapter 💫

📩 Message us for term details or available lesson times.

Just a wee update to let everyone know that I’ll now be only offering Tiny Trotter lessons for ages 2–5 🐴💛

Unfortunately, I’m no longer able to offer lessons for adults or older children for the foreseeable future due to losing horses due to injuries and age. Thank you so much for your understanding and continued support, it truly means a lot.

I do have spaces available on Thursdays and Fridays for Tiny Trotters, so if you have a little one who would love to get involved, please flick me a message 📩

We’ve heard a few whispers going around that we’re closing- but don’t worry, we’re not! 💚

We are, however, heading in a different direction from 2026, everything will continue status quo for the rest of 2025. Two of our wonderful horses have been battling ongoing injuries, and one is ready for a well-deserved retirement from riding school life, so it’s time for a few changes to help us look after them the best we can, especially as I return to my other job part-time after maternity leave.

We’re just finalising a few details and will share more information soon once everything is locked in.

Thank you all so much for your patience, understanding, and continued support - it really means the world to us (and the horses 🐴💞)

Due to horse injury and lesson reshuffles, I now have one space available on Thursdays at 4 PM for school-aged children.

Hey everyone!

I’d love your help supporting my amazing friend Alex, who’s taken on the incredible journey of taming and training a wild Kaimanawa stallion. They’re now at Equifest competing in the stallion challenge and need your votes to win fan favourite. ❤️

Let’s show her some Marlborough love by liking the original post shared below ☺️

Thanks 🤩

Alex van den Brink and Splinter

Just like that, five and a half months have passed — and Splinter and I are now heading to Equifest, alongside an incredible group of horses and competitors. Writing this final update has made me pause and reflect on the most extraordinary journey we’ve shared.

My dream of wild horses began long ago, with a horse-mad toddler who once told a trekking guide I’d been riding for ten years — even though I wasn’t yet school age. Then came the builder’s saw-horse with a wooden neck and head that my brother teased me about — I’d feed it, ride it, and even “muck it out.” That’s actually where Splinter got his name; my brother joked the saw-horse was called Splinter, and I swore one day, Splinter would be a real horse.

That love only grew stronger. In 2022, I brought home my first Kaimanawa — a two-year-old from a wild horse workshop. Watching my mentor Leah and Budding take on the Challenge last year planted the seed. It was both inspiring and daunting, but it made me dream of stepping up to work with a stallion in 2025.

As horses are my hobby, not my job (I work full time in the mental health sector), I’d hoped for a younger bachelor stallion — something just a small step up from my 2022 experience. If I’d known I’d be entrusted with a mature 12-year-old band stallion from Zone 20, I’m not sure I’d have believed I was capable. But looking back now, I feel nothing but love, awe, and gratitude for Splinter..

When he first came in from the ranges, he was heartbroken — lost and unsure after leaving his home and herd behind. It reminded me of the deep grief I’ve seen in some of my mental health patients when they were at their lowest point. I wasn’t sure how our journey would unfold, but from the start, Splinter showed his heart. He quickly earned the nickname “Sensible Splinter,” because even through the biggest change of his life, he gave me his everything.

Over these months, we’ve experienced so much together — from multiple shows and scenic photoshoots to building confidence in new environments and dreaming up a freestyle that captures his spirit. Beyond the arena, it’s been the everyday adventures that have made this journey unforgettable: beach rides, bush-bashing through trails, and liberty fun.

Every experience — whether an adventure, a quiet moment, or a challenge — has deepened our bond in ways I could have only dreamed of. Watching him grow from a wary wild stallion into a confident, connected partner has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. This journey has been one of trust, respect, and quiet resilience — and no matter what happens next, I’m endlessly proud of the horse who walked out of the wild and into my heart.

Just a reminder that lessons start back for Term 4 this week. We look forward to seeing everyone!
