🏏South Otago Junior Cricket – Gear Wanted!

Great to have three South Otago Junior Cricket teams playing in the Dunedin competition this season! 🙌

The teams are mainly made up of Year 5–8 tamariki, with players coming from all over South Otago, from the Catlins to Lawrence, Milton, Clutha Valley, Kaitangata and Balclutha, to name a few.

With the extra teams playing home and away fixtures, they’re on the lookout for some additional cricket gear to help get everyone sorted.

Have you got any old children’s cricket gear sitting at home that’s no longer being used? They’d love to hear from you!

🏏 Bats
🧤 Batting gloves
🦵 Pads
🏟️ Standing wooden wickets
..or anything else that might come in handy!

Happy to consider gear of any age or condition.

Flick us a message here or get in touch directly with South Otago Junior Cricket, and they can arrange to take it off your hands. 🏏

What does this look like for coaches? What does it mean for players? Uili will unpack how culture and identity directly influence performance, shape team environments and impact individuals, teams and the wider sporting environment.

There’ll be opportunities to ask questions and interact with him, and Sport Otago staff, throughout the session. Other coaches from across Otago are also welcome to tune in!

New Referee Development Opportunities in South Otago

We're excited with South Otago Senior Touch to launch the first South Otago Secondary School Touch Referees Academy for students in Years 9-13. The academy is also open to adults who would like to give refereeing a go, improve their knowledge of the game, or develop their officiating skills in a supportive environment.

The new academy complements our popular Junior Referees Academy, helping create a clear pathway for young referees to learn, develop, and stay involved in Touch as they progress through school and beyond.

This is a great opportunity to:

• Learn more about Touch
• Build confidence and leadership skills
• Receive mentoring and support from experienced referees
• Earn some pocket money while giving back to the game
• Receive a referee whistle and singlet
• Gain a certificate recognising your contribution to the sport

Kia ora whānau!

Play Week is fast approaching – and we have some exciting events happening across our community!

In Balclutha and Milton, we’ll be hosting Stencil, Chalk & Play events, where we’ll be launching our new community stencils, available for hire. This project has been a great collaboration between Project Bruce, Clutha District Council, Clutha District Libraries and Sport Clutha, with the aim of creating more opportunities for tamariki and our wider community to get active, creative and playful in their everyday spaces.

At Te Whare Puāwai o Tokomairaro, we’ll also be hosting a Ngā Taonga Tākaro (Traditional Māori Games) Play Afternoon, with a range of Kemu (Games) for tamariki to come along, have a go, learn something new and enjoy playing together.

There are plenty of opportunities to get involved, get active and celebrate the importance of play in our community! 🤸
