A big thank you to everyone who joined us for our club night! 🦌

A special thank you to Callum Sheridan, ACT Party Candidate for Waitākere, for sharing insights into ACT’s hunting and conservation policies, and to the local ACT candidates who came along, introduced themselves and took part in the discussion.

We were also pleased to welcome Nicole McKee MP and acknowledge the significant work and input she has contributed to fi****ms reform in New Zealand. Her involvement in this area has been important to the fi****ms community, and we appreciate her taking the time to attend and engage with our members.

It was great to have an open discussion, ask questions and hear different perspectives on the issues that matter to our hunting and fi****ms community.

Thank you to everyone who came along and helped make it a great evening! 👏

🦌 NOVEMBER PARTY HUNT | WAIPAKIHI RIVER

Our next party hunt is heading to the Waipakihi River, Kaimanawa Forest Park, 13–15 November 2026! 🌿

Due to the high level of interest, places will be allocated by ballot, with 6 hunters drawn.

📍 Waipakihi River, Kaimanawa Forest Park
📅 13–15 November 2026
🎟️ 6 places available
⏰ Register your interest by midnight, 14 October 2026

This is a proper back-to-basics bush hunt, with rolling beech forest, river flats and the chance to spot deer feeding as we head into spring.

🏕️ What to expect:
• Self-supported camping on conservation land
• Bring your own tent, sleeping gear and all food
• Approximately 15km of river-edge hunting through undulating country
• River crossings up to waist height, depending on rainfall
• A reasonable level of fitness and confidence hunting independently is essential

There will also be an opportunity to join the servicing of our conservation team’s predator trap line on Saturday for anyone keen to learn more about the work involved. 🌱

A few important things:
✔️ DOC permit required
✔️ Blaze vest mandatory
✔️ Minimum gear list provided to successful applicants

This hunt is best suited to confident hunters who are comfortable in remote bush conditions and prepared for a self-sufficient weekend outdoors.

🎯 Keen to be in the draw? Make sure you register your interest before the deadline!

Good luck, everyone — see you out there! 🦌🌿

What a great bunch of lads to spend the weekend with. It was awesome to see some of the younger hunters getting out into the scrub, learning new skills, making memories, and enjoying everything that hunting is about.

🦌 HUNTER TRAINING | WEEK 6 RECAP

This week our hunter trainees got hands-on with butchery, with Sam leading a fantastic practical session.

Starting with field dressing, trainees learned how to safely gut, skin, and completely bone out an animal, gaining valuable skills that help ensure every part of the harvest is respected and utilised.

The session also covered what to look for when assessing an animal’s health, including signs of illness, disease or abnormalities that could affect meat quality and suitability for consumption. Understanding these checks is an important part of being an ethical and responsible hunter.

With step-by-step guidance, Sam demonstrated the process from field to freezer, giving trainees the confidence and knowledge to take venison from field to fork and proudly share it with family and friends.

A huge thank you to Sam for sharing his expertise and helping our hunters build essential skills for ethical, responsible, and sustainable hunting.

A great day on the range starts before you even leave home. 🎯

To help everything run smoothly, make sure you’re prepared before arriving:

✅ Register before Thursday midnight
✅ Bring Class 5 Earmuffs for everyone attending
✅ Fit a chamber flag to every fi***rm before leaving your vehicle
✅ Check your vehicle is suitable for the gravel access road and carries a spare tyre

A little preparation means less time at the gate and more time on the firing line.

We want your range day to be a great experience, so take a few minutes to check you’ve got everything sorted before heading out.

See you on the range! 🔥

🦌 HUNTER TRAINING | WEEK 5 RECAP

This week our Hunter Training participants focused on some of the most important aspects of ethical hunting: understanding New Zealand’s big game species, how and where to hunt them and effective shot placement.

The evening covered:

• Identifying New Zealand’s big game animals and understanding their behaviour including animal sign
• Hunting ethics and techniques
• Species-specific hunting considerations
• Vital zones and ethical shot placement
• Hunting at different times of the year
• Making responsible decisions before taking a shot

A well-placed shot is one of the most important responsibilities of every hunter. Understanding animal anatomy, knowing your effective range, and recognising when not to take a shot are key skills that help ensure humane and ethical harvests.

A huge thank you to Sam for sharing his knowledge and experience with the next generation of hunters.
