Yang's Martial Arts Association New Zealand

Yang's Martial Arts Association New Zealand New Zealand's home of Yang's Martial Arts Association. Traditional Tai Chi Chuan, Qigong and Kung fu training for total mindbody fitness. in all things.

The YMAA training program, devised by Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming can be divided into three main sections:
• External Styles (‘Kung Fu’ – includes Shaolin White Crane, Shaolin Long Fist and Chin Na),
• Internal Styles (Tai Chi – includes Chin Na), and
• Qigong (studied in both Tai-Chi and Kung-Fu). Shaolin White Crane (Bai He) focuses on hand techniques and short range fighting, while Shaolin Long Fis

t (Changquan) focuses on kicking and long range fighting. Both are trained in YMAA External Styles training, and the techniques of both styles are used in sparring practice. Chin Na is also studied. The Chinese characters for Tai Chi Chuan (also written as Taijiquan) can be translated as the 'Supreme Ultimate Fist'. The concept of 'supreme ultimate' is often associated with the Chinese concept of yin-yang, this exhibits the understanding that one can see a dynamic duality (male/female, active/passive, dark/light, forceful/yielding, etc.) Qigong means ‘the Study of Natural Energy.’ Western science has identified a bio-electric potential in the body which could be one of the primary aspects of Qi energy. This ‘bio-electricity’ is recognized by YMAA as an important area of Qigong study and research. The Qigong classes offered at YMAA study Qi in realtion to health, longevity, and martial arts, and follow the methods developed by Buddhists, Daoists, and also martial artists. Qigong training is incorporated into Tai Chi classes

Qigong forms a vital part of any martial art as it is the connection between body and mind through Qi. Qigong should not be confused with Tai Chi Chuan. Tai Chi is a principles or philosophy that forms the basis of the martial art. Qigong is the practice Qi regulation. Without Qi regulation the Tai Chi Chuan movements are empty. Qigong and Tai Chi are therefore separate concepts but in practice inseparable.
