Today, we’re excited to share a significant step forward for the future of our elite domestic competition in Aotearoa 🏐

Netball New Zealand has signed a non-binding term sheet with investors Anna Mowbray and Ali Williams to work towards privatising our elite domestic competition from 2027.

This means we’re working towards a professional competition where players have a meaningful career pathway, coaches and support staff have opportunities, fans have teams to get behind, and young netballers around the motu have athletes to look up to.

This work has been shaped in consultation with the New Zealand Netball Players’ Association and the Zones, and we’re all feeling positive about the direction we’re heading.

We know the past three years have been incredibly challenging for everyone who loves this game; players, teams, coaches, match officials, staff and fans.

So today is about looking forward. There’s more work to do, but this is an important step towards a strong, sustainable future for elite netball in Aotearoa.

Netball New Zealand is excited to announce the umpire appointments for the 2026 NetballSmart Netball NZ Open Champs and NZ Secondary Schools Netball Champs

The Netball NZ Open Championships will take place at Rodney Green Arena in Napier from 10 to 13 September, followed by the NZ Secondary Schools Championships at Auckland Netball Centre from 6 to 9 October.

Netball New Zealand is deeply saddened by the passing of former Silver Ferns captain Ana Noovao, who died peacefully on Sunday surrounded by her family in Rockhampton, Queensland, aged 58.

A gifted attacker with natural creativity and a beautiful feed, Ana debuted for the Silver Ferns in 1989, aged 21. She was named the 15th captain of the Silver Ferns in 1992 and played 23 tests in black across four seasons.

Proud of her Cook Islands heritage, she went on to play two seasons for the Cook Islands and later coached them to seventh at the 2007 World Netball Championships.

Her greatest legacy may be the players she taught. Generations of South Auckland schoolgirls came through her sessions, and more recently she kept building the game in her Queensland community.

Our aroha is with Ana's whānau, her friends and the netball community in Aotearoa, the Cook Islands and Australia.

For 100 years, Kia Ora Netball Club has been bringing people together through a shared love of netball.

Generations of players, volunteers, coaches and supporters recently reunited to celebrate the club's centenary, marking a milestone that reflects not only longevity, but the friendships, traditions and community that have defined the Wellington club since its beginnings in 1926.
