8 Reasons why you should give a 💩 about improving your roots.

When it comes to Grass, we rely on it heavily to feed our horses. It’s their main source of food and it is what is most healthy for their systems to digest, Especially when we get it right.

Getting grass healthy so our horses can be healthy should be our most important goal.

What’s happening below the ground determines everything happening above the ground.

Strong roots allow grass plants to:

🌱 Access water deeper in the soil during dry periods
🌱 Recover faster after grazing
🌱 Take up nutrients more efficiently
🌱 Grow thicker and more consistently
🌱 Create a denser pasture that leaves less room for weeds
🌱 Improve soil structure and reduce muddy, compacted paddocks in winter ❄️
🌱 Build resilience so your paddocks keep producing instead of burning out
🌱 Keep the good grazers you love from leaving because they arn’t paying for grazing & spending hundreds each week to keep the condition on their horse too!

When roots are weak, grass struggles to regrow leaving more sugar in the grass for horses to consume, horses become “grass effected”. The pasture becomes thin, horses graze the plants too low making it hard for the grass to recover. Bare patches appear, weeds move in, and, suddenly you’re relying on more baleage & supplementary feed.

It’s an easy fix really, your pocket will thank you for as its cheaper than constant hard feed and grain to supplement the grass that isn’t enough - your horses will thank you. And, you’re doing good by the Soil 💖

I had an extra trip down to Pōkeno today!
One of our side-by-side’s was there for a job and, unfortunately, it decided to cut out every time it was under load. Frustrating for them as they needed a sided by side due to theirs also being in the work shop 😅😬

Luckily, It seems to just be a dirty fuel problem 👏🏼👏🏼
An easy fix but something that can stop a full operation, demonstrating the benefits of hiring/leasing - we keep you moving whether it’s yours or ours that is faulty & do the repairs for you ✨

Anywho, I zipped down to pōkeno with an extra side-by-side to swap around so they stay unaffected & I can sort out this fuel problem on the first one.
On the plus side, I got this epically cool photo of the working dogs in the back of this side-by-side.

How cute are they ? 😍🐾

Our boom sprayer has been heading out on hire a lot over the last few weeks, so I thought I’d explain why!

Many horse owners find themselves spending more and more money on baleage because their paddocks are overgrazed, grass growth can’t keep up with demand, and the pasture becomes thin and patchy.
Before long, there’s more soil than grass in some areas, and rain instantly turns those areas into mud.

The solution isn’t simply feeding more hard feed or buying more baleage. Baleage should be a compliment or top-up to grass, not a necessity.

The real solution is building strong, healthy pasture with strong root development and consistent grass growth.

Thick, healthy grass provides the fibre and nutrients your horses need while helping paddocks stay productive year-round.

While many people think about fertilising in spring, it’s just as important to fertilise at this time of year too. The goal isn’t to create lush, high-sugar grass, but to encourage strong root systems and healthy high-fibre pasture, that fills your horse’s belly and supports their nutritional needs.

Healthy roots Equal healthy grass = healthier paddocks Equal happier horses & healthier bank accounts 🙌🏼🦄
