The Bowls North Harbour Open 2-4-2 Any Combination Pairs wrapped up on Saturday after two weekends of high-quality winter bowls. Hosted primarily on the greens at Manly Bowling Club across June 13, 14, and 20, the tournament’s unique 2-4-2 format—where players swap between lead and skip duties within the same end—kept spectators guessing and players on their toes from the first delivery to the last.

While host club Manly put on a dominant showing by filling three of the four semi-final spots in the Main Championship, it was the visiting Mt Albert combinations who proved to be the ultimate party poopers.

Main Championship: A Last-End Thriller

The knockout stages delivered exceptionally accurate drawing and tactical positioning, culminating in a classic Auckland vs. North Harbour showdown in the final.

The Semi-Finals

Tony Grantham & Zoran Bartulovich (Mt Albert) faced Manly’s Helen Briant and Bruce Shirley. After five ends, the scores were locked tight at 5-all, but the Mt Albert duo found another gear in the closing stages to book their final spot with a 10–6 victory.

Shaun Goldsbury & Skye Renes (Manly) kept the local hopes alive in the second semi-final. Taking on another strong Mt Albert pair in Colin Ayris-Webster and Hitesh Ranchhod, the Manly duo put on a clinic to run away with a comprehensive 11–3 win.

The Final: Down to the Wire

The final between Goldsbury/Renes and Grantham/Bartulovich was an absolute classic with nothing separating the two teams. The Manly pair held a slim 6–4 advantage after seven ends, but shots were traded fiercely over the subsequent ends, leaving the scoreboard deadlocked at 9-all heading into the 12th and final end.

The final end was a cracker. Almost every bowl delivered had a chance to alter the outcome in a high-pressure head. Ultimately, it was Mt Albert who clutched the deciding shot, taking the title with a 10–9 victory.

Huge congratulations to Tony Grantham and Zoran Bartulovich on a fantastic tournament!

Plate Event: Bay Pair Takes the Prize

The Plate tournament provided a second life for teams moving out of the main draw, ensuring a full, competitive schedule of matches across the two weekends.

The title went down the highway to Bay of Plenty, with the Mount Maunganui pairing of Nathan Arlidge and Malina Laloli navigating a tough knockout field to claim the silverware.

Plate Finals Results

Semi-Final 1: Nathan Arlidge & Malina Laloli (Mt Maunganui) def. Aaron White & Max Yates (8–4)
Semi-Final 2: Matt Berry & Lindsay Gilmore def. Steve Cox & Brian Wilson (9–8)
Grand Final: Nathan Arlidge & Malina Laloli (Mt Maunganui) def. Matt Berry & Lindsay Gilmore (11–8)

REPRESENTATIVE TEAM LEADER APPOINTMENTS

Bowls North Harbour is pleased to confirm the appointments of the lead management personnel who will guide the representative teams for this next season. One notable change has been incorporated with both the Premier and Development squads being under the one management. This comes from the decision made at the Zone One and Two meeting in April where agreement from all the centres was for the men - Premier and Development - teams being played at one venue and the women - Premier and Development - teams being played at another venue. This decision was seen to be able to alternate the players between the two teams seamlessly and eases the commitment for coaching staff. Development team members remain in the 1 to 10 years bowling experience.
The appointments confirmed by the Board of Bowls North Harbour are –
Men (Premier & Development) Charlie McDonald. Charlie had charge of the men’s Development squad last year and prior to that, as a player, through the 1990’s and early 2000’s represented Counties Manukau for nine years and has won eight centre titles to date.
Women (Premier and Development) Brett O'Riley. Brett is well known to most of our bowlers, having been a successful player and leader in the bowling community. Brett is concluding his term as World Bowls president in the next few months and will then be giving his time to the women's squad during the season.
Men (1 to 5 year) Dave Vince. Dave continues on from leading this group last season and is looking forward to increasing the strength and depth of the squad to achieve higher honours in the season ahead.
Women (1 to 5 year) Greg Taylor. Greg is continuing on leading this management team and group of players who finished the season on a high at the Octagonal in Tauranga. Again a number of those players will be available again this season and Greg is looking forward to what the players can achieve at this level in the season ahead
A further announcement will be made after the lead managers have confirmed the balance of their coach/selector personnel for each of the squads.

Tony Popplewell
Chairman,
Bowls North Harbour.

The future of North Harbour bowls was on full display over the weekend of 6 and 7 June 2026, as the region’s finest emerging talents converged for the BNH 1-5 Year Champ of Champ Singles.

Featuring a stellar field of club champions, the tournament delivered high-stakes drama, immense skill, and a fantastic showcase of consistency under pressure. When the dust settled on Sunday afternoon, two incredibly deserving players stood tall as the center's newest junior champions.

The Champions' Circle

The 1-5 Year Champ of Champ Singles is one of the toughest junior titles to win, requiring absolute precision across two grueling days of knockout bowls.

Men’s Champion: Shaun Goldsbury (Manly)
Shaun put on an absolute clinic over the weekend, navigating a highly competitive men's field. His composure and ex*****on when it mattered most secured a brilliant victory for the Manly club.

Women’s Champion: Rebecca Brosnan (Takapuna)
Rebecca showed incredible draw-bowling consistency and tactical maturity to outlast a fierce women's lineup, bringing yet another prestigious center title back to the Takapuna headquarters.

A Showcase of Junior Depth

The high caliber of bowls on display over the two days proved that the depth of talent across our North Harbour clubs is growing stronger every season. Playing in a Champ of Champs event is a massive milestone, and every single club representative pushed their opponents to the limit.

A massive thank you to the host venue, the volunteers, and the umpires/markers who gave up their weekend to ensure the tournament ran smoothly. Mahurangi East, you are a brilliant host club!!! Hot soup and a table full of yummies. Thank you.

Congratulations to Shaun and Rebecca on their incredible triumphs, and to all the club champions who qualified and made the weekend such a highly competitive event!
