Kim Bok Man was a major technical pioneer and early international instructor whose influence helped shape the development of Taekwon-Do in its formative years. His knowledge, experience and commitment contributed to the art at a foundational level, and his legacy continues to be felt through generations of practitioners and instructors around the world.

Kim Bok Man was the instructor of R.A. Jayaramun in Singapore.
R.A. Jayaramun taught Tere Maorikava.
Tere Maorikava taught Sam Clark.
Sam Clark taught me.

That lineage matters.

Kim Bok Man represents the strength of those foundations. His example reminds us that Taekwon-Do is built not only on movement, but on knowledge, discipline, patience and the willingness to dedicate one’s life to the growth of the art.

Strong foundations shape the art.
Kim Bok Man's life reminds us that knowledge is never meant to stop with one person. It is meant to be shared. It is meant to guide others. It is meant to outlive us.

In martial arts, dedication is often quiet. It is found in repetition, in correction, in discipline, and in the commitment to keep showing up year after year. That kind of dedication does more than build skill, it builds legacy.

As practitioners, we honour those who came before us by training well, teaching well, and ensuring that what has been passed to us is preserved and strengthened for those who follow.

That is part of the legacy Kim Bok Man represents.

His story reminds us that the strength of Taekwon-Do is not only in its techniques, but in the people who shaped it, preserved it and handed it on through unbroken lines of instruction and trust.

Today we acknowledge Mr Tere Maorikava, a New Zealand ITF Taekwon-Do pioneer and the instructor of Mr Sam Clark.

For Dragon’s Spirit Taekwon-Do, that matters deeply.

Mr Sam Clark was the founding instructor of Papatoetoe Taekwon-Do, now Dragon’s Spirit. But before that foundation was laid, there were those who taught, guided and influenced the people who would go on to build clubs, shape students and pass Taekwon-Do into the next generation.

Mr Tere Maorikava is one of those important figures in our whakapapa.

His influence reminds us that Taekwon-Do is not built on technique alone. It is also built on belief — belief in the art, belief in the training process, belief in others, and belief in what is possible through discipline and commitment.

Belief is often what carries us before confidence arrives.

In martial arts, there will always be hard days. There will be frustration, fatigue, setbacks and moments of doubt. There will be times when progress feels slow and the goal feels distant.

The people who came before us did more than teach movements. They passed on standards, values and conviction. They believed that what they were building mattered — and because of that belief, others were able to follow.

That is part of the legacy Mr Tere Maorikava represents.

His place in the lineage that influenced Mr Sam Clark reminds us that what we practise today has been handed down through people who believed deeply in Taekwon-Do and in the people they taught.

Our responsibility is to honour that belief by training well, persevering through difficulty, and passing the art on stronger than we received it.
