It sounds like a logical plan. It's getting colder; the open-water season is basically done, so you think you'll just hibernate and sort the swim out when the sun comes back.
But my advice: Summer is for racing; winter is for building. If you wait until summer to fix your stroke, youโve missed a big opportunity to really work on improving your swimming.
Technique developments arenโt like turning on a light switch. They take two distinct phases:
๐งLearning it: Breaking down old, inefficient habits.
๐คนEmbedding it: Making the new movements completely automatic.
When we change your stroke, your body has to map out entirely new neuromuscular pathways.
At first, you have to think about every single entry, catch, and breath.
If you try to do that under the stress of a summer training block or race day adrenaline, your brain will immediately default back to your oldest, ugliest habits.
On top of that, you need time to build the specific muscular strength required to hold that new form.
A better body position or a cleaner catch uses different muscles, and those muscles need months of consistent work to build the endurance to survive a long swim.
Winter gives you the time in quiet lane space and mental space to imbed these changes in a controlled pool environment.
By the time summer arrives, the technique is automatic, the strength is there, and you can seamlessly take that efficiency out into the open water.
Spend your winter fixing it so you can spend your summer making minor tweaks and racing fast.
