Iaido is the art of the Japanese sword, of drawing and striking in a single, smooth movement. Using metal swords (Iaito), students learn Kata - Simulated combat situations that reflect the traditional uses of the sword. Developed four centuries ago, the art teaches the techniques and posture required to correctly handle a sword, along with developing the focus, confidence, and general well-being o

f the student. Auckland Iaido Club trains in the dojo of the Auckland Kendo Club. The club teaches Seitei Iaido and Muso Shinden Ryu traditional Iaido. Everyone from beginners upward is welcome to come along and practice at our weekly Thursday evening sessions from 7pm to 9pm, 2B Malvern Road, Onehunga, Auckland. If you have ever wondered what it was like to use a Japanese sword or wanted to know a bit more about the traditions that surround them, come along and join in a class!

The Auckland Iaido Club proudly hosted this year’s annual Spring Seminar over the weekend of 18–19 October, welcoming participants from across the North Island — including members from the Wellington, New Plymouth, and Whangarei Iaido Clubs.

This year’s seminar focused on putting into practice the latest teachings from Kaneda Sensei in Seitei Iai, hosting our very first Iaido competition, and concluding the year with our final grading.

We also took time to celebrate the success of our members who travelled to Australia for their grading — all of whom returned with outstanding results!

2025 has truly been a remarkable year for the Auckland Iaido Club, and we look forward to continuing this momentum and growth into 2026.

Slightly unusual training today. It’s fun to experiment with moving over uneven terrain.
