At Auckland Yoga Academy, we train all our own teachers, ensuring a consistent approach to teaching that integrates functional anatomy, intelligent adjustments and a deep understanding of the Ashtanga yoga tradition.

Here, Barry applies the principles of functional anatomy as he carefully guides Yana’s hip into deep flexion in Trivikramasana, respecting the relationship between joint mobility, muscular flexibility and individual anatomical structure.

Yana’s dedication to her Ashtanga practice is evident as she continues her journey towards completing the Primary Series.

We are at the Academy’s Yoga Retreat in North Cove Kawau Island preparing the house for our participants. And yet again we are caught by the magic of this island where a conservation project is in place. My heart sings!!

Asato mā sad gamaya
Tamaso mā jyotir gamaya
Mṛtyor mā amṛtaṃ gamaya
Oṃ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ
English Translation
Lead me from the unreal to the real.
Lead me from darkness to light.
Lead me from mortality to immortality.
Om, peace, peace, peace.
Source: Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad 1.3.28.
This ancient prayer expresses the movement from ignorance towards wisdom, from illusion towards truth, and from identification with the transient towards recognition of the eternal.
The three repetitions of Śāntiḥ traditionally invoke peace in relation to three sources of disturbance: those arising within ourselves, those arising from the world around us, and those attributed to forces beyond our control.

Deconstructing a pose into its key joint movements can help us understand what the body actually needs to do — and where limitations may be occurring.

In Baddha Konasana, understanding the movements required at the hips, knees and ankles can help us practise more intelligently, rather than simply trying to push the knees closer to the floor.

Understanding the movement is part of understanding the pose.
