Ponsonby was absolutely buzzing as the Croatian community packed the Longroom for the World Cup clash against England. Thank you to everyone who came out and created such an incredible atmosphere.

But this story goes deeper than one match.

Croatia, the Mediterranean spirit, and the love of football sit right at the foundation of Auckland City FC. Those Croatian roots shaped the club’s mentality — the work ethic, the family culture, the passion that still defines the Navy Blues today.

Kiwitea Street has welcomed players from Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceania for decades. Our history has been written by Croatians, Māori, Spaniards, Japanese, Koreans, Solomon Islanders, South Africans, Argentinians — and so many more.

He’s back!
Iconic defender Christian Gray - the man who scored one of the most famous goals in Auckland City history in our 1–1 draw vs Boca Juniors at last year’s FIFA Club World Cup, where he was also named MVP — has returned to the Navy Blues for the rest of the season.

Alongside him, two exciting young talents also join the club:
Fergus Gillion and Matt Foord.

Head Coch Rudy Mozr on the new signings:

🎙️ “Fergus is a young player with everything ahead of him, but even at his age he has already shown what he is capable of. I’m extremely happy to have him with us because he brings something different to our team. He was actually a player I was interested in signing back in January, but he had just joined Bula Boys, so it wasn’t possible at the time. I’m really pleased we were finally able to make it happen.”

🎙️ “Matt is a young goalkeeper who already has very good experience — New Zealand age‑group teams, Wellington Phoenix, and most recently the OFC Pro League.
I’m expecting him to strengthen what is already a very strong goalkeeping group. What stood out to me was how comfortable he is with the ball at his feet, while also being very strong on the goal line.”

🎙️ “There probably isn’t too much that needs to be said about Christian. Everyone knows the type of player he is and how much he is loved around the club. He brings quality, experience, and a great personality to the group. We’re very happy to have him back, and I think everyone associated with the club will be excited to see him wearing our colours again.”

“It was a tough test — it always is against East Coast Bays. They’re a quality side and play good football. For the neutral it was probably a great spectacle, and we’re obviously stoked to make our way into the next round.”
