Ainsley Thorpe Triathlete produced her best result at World Triathlon Championship Series (WTCS) in more than two years while deep frustration was the takeaway for Saxon Morgan - Triathlete at WTCS Weihai on Saturday.

Thorpe was 27th in the women’s standard distance race, her best finish at WTCS level since finishing 18th at WTCS Hamburg in July 2024 just before her second Olympic Games appearance at Paris. It was a solid performance as the Cambridge-based athlete battles back from the reoccurrence of a stress reaction injury in a leg.

The 28-year-old had been ranked 38th for the race in China and has subsequently returned inside the world’s top 100, up 18 places to 97th. Importantly, her Olympic qualification ranking has improved from 71st to 65th.

Fourth out of the water and positioned at the pointy end of the 40km bike, Morgan was on course for a season best WTCS performance only to have what was his 100th World Triathlon-sanctioned start ruined by a puncture.

The trick now is to find starts to maintain/cash in on that untapped form as the build towards World Triathlon Cup Tauranga on November 22 begins.

Triathlon New Zealand is seeking expressions of interest for members to join the Elite Selection Commission.

The Elite Selection Commission is constituted by the Tri NZ Board with full power to consider and select athletes for all Elite and/or High Performance Teams and/or Squads that represent New Zealand in triathlon, duathlon, aquathlon and other disciplines governed in the World Triathlon (TRI) family, and other duties as may be designated to it by the Board from time to time.

The Commission comprises a maximum five members, including an independent Chair, and three further independent members, and the Tri NZ GM: Performance (who joins the commission as an observer with speaking rights, but no voting rights).

There are currently two vacancies to be filled, with the incumbent members at the end of their term.

The independent members are appointed on the basis of knowledge and understanding of current World Triathlon elite triathlon, triathletes and performance trends, and experience and/or appreciation of sports governing bodies and a capability to up-hold the principles set out in the terms of reference.
