Kohimarama Yacht Club (KYC)

Over the weekend, four KYC sailors travelled to Tauranga to compete for the Wihau Shield and Secretary's Cup. This event is unique to the P-class: all sailors race together on the first day, then the top five go on to sail for the Wihau Shield on Sunday while the rest compete for the Secretary's Cup. The Wihau Shield involves swapping boats, so each finalist sails in every other finalist's boat.

This year Luca made it through to the Wihau and sailed very well to finish 2nd. Lewis, Hugh and Hudson sailed in the Secretary's Cup, with Lewis taking 1st, Hugh 3rd and Hudson 8th. Well done to all four!

It was great to see 22 P-class boats on the water, with plenty of new faces in the class. A big thank you to the team at TYPBC for hosting another very enjoyable event. We're all looking forward to the Nationals in January.

Seven of our KYC development sailors; Henry Hall, Casey Fitness, Paz Avery, Jungwon Park, Forest Avery, Jasmine Fry and Dallas Noyer, recently travelled to Lake Macquarie, NSW, with coaches Sean and Rowan Kensington for an awesome week of sailing!

It was a fantastic learning experience, with plenty of challenges and new skills gained. For some, the 75-boat fleet was the biggest start line they had ever experienced!

There was plenty of fun off the water too, with beach trips, watching whales breach, go-kart racing, shopping, swimming and soaking up the warm NSW sunshine.

Now they’re back home and ready to kick off the summer sailing season with new skills, fresh confidence and many new sailing friends.
