Central United Football Club

Central United Football Club The Official page of Central United FC. Established 1962. NZ Club of the Year 1994, 1996 & 1997.

Five-time Chatham Cup Winners, Two-time National League Champions, Four-time Northern Premier League Champions. Central Soccer Club came about in 1962, following the efforts of a group of young Dalmatian immigrants. They gathered together each weekend, seeking support from each other's company, having been subjected to the twin torments of language difficulties and cultural differences at the resp

ective places of employment during the week. Their passion for football, which remained with them despite having left their homeland, was the key to the club being formed. Because the club had no junior teams, central played in the lowest senior grade for the first four years of the club's existence, and consequently remained at that level, despite winning the championship on each occasion. Throughout the 1970s, Central picked up four championships and six second placings, but the continued lack of junior teams within the club meant their efforts weren't recognised by way of promotion to higher grades. However this situation was to change in the following decade, as Central, now with a junior section to their name, began their meteoric rise to the upper echelons of New Zealand soccer. They surged up through the Northern League grades rising from Division Four to the Premier League in a five year period from 1984. A hiccup was recorded in 1990, when Central were relegated back to Division One. One season later, Central proudly displayed the First Division championship in their trophy cabinet. This was followed up with third place in the 1992 Bluebird Northern Premier League, and promotion to the newly-created Winfield Superclub competition for 1993. In this, they finished fifth a more than satisfactory return from their first campaign amongst the "big boys", and an obvious springboard from which to launch the clubs recent success.

United We Stand ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’›

It was a battle of the Uniteds on a sunny afternoon at the Croatian Club as Central United hosted Albany United. Central entered the fixture sitting third on the table, while Albany arrived just one place above the relegation zone.

The home side dominated the opening exchanges, with Ermal Fusha and Bogdan Dida both testing the Albany goalkeeper with powerful efforts. Central looked the more dangerous side throughout the first half and appeared to have deservedly taken the lead after 35 minutes in extraordinary circumstances.

Brandon James unleashed a thunderous right-foot volley from 15 metres that rocketed into the top-left corner of the net. The ball struck the stanchion and rebounded back into play, causing confusion for players and officials alike. Both teams stopped, expecting the goal to be awarded, only for the referee to signal play on. Unfortunately, the officials believed the ball had struck the post rather than crossed the line. After several minutes of discussion between players and match officials, the legitimate goal was ruled out.

Despite their frustration, Central remained composed and continued to control proceedings, but neither side could find a breakthrough before halftime as the teams went into the break locked at 0-0.

The hosts wasted little time making amends after the restart. Just two minutes into the second half, Isaac Hamilton calmly finished from close range to finally give Central the lead and right the earlier wrong.

Central managed the remainder of the contest professionally, creating numerous opportunities through James, Dida, Hamilton and Fusha without adding to their tally. The final word belonged to substitute Dillon Houching, who bundled home from close range in the dying moments to seal a deserved 2-0 victory.

It was a comprehensive performance from Central United, one that further underlines the clubโ€™s genuine title ambitions. The win leaves the Yellow Yellow just two points off top spot heading into a crucial away clash against second-placed Bucklands Beach next weekend.

McLeod Road Showdown

With the Croatian Cultural Society only a stones throw away, Waitemata FC provided the opposition for this eagerly anticipated McLeod Road match up.

Central started brightly and dominated the early exchanges. Wingers Isaac Hamilton and Ermal Fusha continually stretched the Waitemata defence, creating problems whenever they went forward.

After 28 minutes, Central struck gold. A long clearance from goalkeeper Ernest Wong was allowed to bounce just beyond halfway by a hesitant Waitemata backline. Fusha needed no second invitation. As the ball sailed over the head of the retreating defender, he raced through and calmly lifted a superb lob over the advancing goalkeeper to give Central a deserved 1-0 lead.

The goal sparked a dominant spell for the visitors, who looked increasingly likely to extend their advantage. Their persistence was rewarded in the final minute of the half when Matt Kelly expertly guided an excellent cross from Hamilton into the net, sending Central into the break with a commanding 2-0 lead.

Waitemata emerged from halftime with renewed determination and enjoyed their best period of the match. For the opening ten minutes of the second half, only some resolute Central defending prevented the home side from getting back into the contest.

The breakthrough eventually came on the hour mark when Waitemata captain Lukas Webster rose highest to head home and reduce the deficit to 2-1.

Central responded well, regaining their composure and pushing forward in search of a decisive third goal. Bogdan Dida, Luke Pank, Dillon Houching and the impressive Fusha all had opportunities to put the game beyond doubt but were unable to convert.

The final ten minutes produced an entertaining, if somewhat nerve-racking, spectacle as both sides searched desperately for another goal. After a lengthy period of stoppage time, the referee finally brought proceedings to an end.

The Central management team looked both relieved and delighted following a gutsy and determined team performance. Few sides will leave McLeod Road this season with all three points in the bag, making this a particularly valuable victory.

Attention now turns to next week's home fixture against Albany at the Croatian Club. As always, your support is greatly appreciated and we look forward to seeing you there.

Player of the Day: Ermal Fusha

*Congratulations also to Centralโ€™s U23 side who maintained their lead at the top of the NRFL Northern Conference U23 competition with a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Waitemata FC in the earlier match at McLeod Road.
