Something I have been thinking about recently.

Something I have been thinking about recently.

A Sensei’s reflection…

One of the hardest things for me to see is a student give up on karate simply because they have reached the point where they do not want to do it anymore.

I understand it. Kids get tired. They get frustrated. They have days when they would rather be doing anything else. Sometimes there are genuine reasons to move on.

But there is a difference between genuinely wanting to stop and simply not wanting to push through a difficult phase.

We often put our children into activities because we want them to learn discipline.

But discipline is not built on the days they are excited to train.

It is built on the days they are tired, frustrated or simply cannot be bothered — and they learn to show up anyway.

That is where karate teaches so much more than kicks and punches: perseverance, resilience, patience, respect and the ability to keep going when something gets hard.

I think swimming is a great comparison. We teach our children to swim because it is an essential life skill. They might not always want to go to lessons, but we know it is something worth persevering with because one day it could save their life.

Karate teaches a different kind of life skill.

Learning that difficult does not automatically mean quit is something they can carry with them long after they leave the dojo.

Because one day, we will not be there to make the hard things easier.

So maybe the lesson is not always:

“I love karate.”

Sometimes it is simply:

“I did not want to go… but I went anyway.”

“I found it hard… but I kept trying.”

“I wanted to quit… but I got through it.”

And perhaps that is one of the greatest things we can give our children:

The confidence to know they are capable of doing hard things.

Thinking about getting your child into karate? Send me a message. I would love to chat with you about how karate can help your child build confidence, discipline and resilience — both inside and outside the dojo.

Thursday night training at TAP GKR.

Another great night of training, with each belt group working on different aspects of their karate and continuing to build their skills.

White & Yellow Belts
We worked through a mixture of stances, front and side kicks, combinations and First Kata, finishing with some shoulder sparring.

Orange & Green Belts
The focus was on stances, pushing past the mental limits we sometimes put on ourselves during line drills and kata, along with strike positioning, including centre targeting and height. We worked through First and Second Kata before finishing with some shoulder sparring.

Blue Belts & Above
Our more advanced students worked on Sumo Stance and hip work using blocks, focusing on movement, stability and control.

A big congratulations to Conrad, who graded to 9th Kyu Yellow Tip. Great work, Conrad!

Well done to everyone who trained last night. Keep challenging yourselves and working towards that next step.

In mid-June, several of our Queensland, New South Wales and Victorian senior group volunteered to complete a Homes set-up with our charity partner, RizeUp Australia.

RizeUp provides all the practical items needed for victim-survivors of family and domestic violence to make a fresh start, including furniture and other household items that help transform empty houses into homes.

When each of our GKR teams arrived at their location, they were greeted by a RizeUp driver, an empty house and a truck filled with flatpacks and homewares. The teams set about unloading the truck, assembling the flatpacks, making beds, filling pantries and carefully decorating the space. This included fitting out children’s bedrooms and providing them with the materials needed to start at a new school.

After 4+ hours of work at each location, the transformation from house to home left a lasting memory for all involved. With the knowledge that a family would be entering their newly furnished home in the coming days, each team member took comfort in knowing that they had helped create a new beginning for someone in need.

We are incredibly grateful to RizeUp for the work they do and for the opportunity to be involved in their Homes program. We also appreciate the amazing support shown by all of our students and instructors who participate in the Stop Domestic & Family Violence Purple Belt Campaign. Your involvement means a lot, not only to RizeUp and the families they help, but also to GKR Karate as a whole.

If you would like to volunteer with RizeUp to help setting up Homes, information can be found here https://www.rizeup.com.au/volunteer
