❤️‍🔥 Last week, each of our Intermediate students was asked......

“What does connection mean to you?”

There were many different answers, but as the discussion went on, almost all of them seemed to lead back to the same ideas:

“The synchronicity of movement.”
“Being able to feel my partner with each step.”
“An exchange without words.”
“The music and my partner.”
and so on…….

Many years ago, I used to practise outdoors with a friend at the Auckland Art Gallery Amphitheatre, as we couldn't afford a studio. One afternoon, after practising as usual, we finished and suddenly heard someone clapping. A stranger had been watching us.

She said something I still remember:

“I saw you two dancing from inside the gallery. I don't know what you're dancing, and I can't hear what you're listening to, but I can feel it just watching. That's why I wanted to come out and find out what this is. It’s beautiful.”

Perhaps that is the beauty of Tango. The connection belongs to the dancers, but the feeling can reach far beyond them.

🎫 Good Dancer, Bad Dancer — Who Decides? 🐣🕵️‍♀️

When people talk about “bad dancers”, beginners are often the first people who come to mind.

But perhaps Tango invite us to look at it differently........

Beginners who regularly come to class are often the ones trying the hardest to dance well. They listen, practise, ask questions and, most importantly, are open to learning. They work on their technique, musicality, connection and awareness of their partner.

Of course they make mistakes. We all do. They are learning, exploring and finding their way through tango. Being inexperienced doesn’t make someone a bad dancer.

From my experience, the greater challenge can come when we have been dancing for a long time and begin to believe that experience alone is enough. We may stop taking classes, seeking feedback or questioning our own dancing. Without realising it, we can simply repeat the same habits year after year.

Years of dancing and years of learning are not necessarily the same thing.

Tango has a wonderful way of reminding us that there is always something more to discover; in the music, in the embrace, in our partner and in ourselves.

Perhaps what makes a good dancer isn’t how long we have been dancing, but how well we dance. ❤ 😉
