A Tribute to Pete Dix 💔
Today my heart is heavy. Last night I learned that my dear friend and brother, Peter Dix, passed away. Pete was more than just a Ludus member - he was a man with a huge heart, a man who always had time for me, and someone who carried himself with humility and kindness in everything he did.
I feel compelled to share this story because not only does it sum up who Pete was, but it is an eerie reminder of how precious life is. A while back I was going through a rough time and mentioned to him that I’d broken my TV. Not long after, he turned up and gave me one. That was Pete – always looking out for others, always giving, never expecting anything in return. Now since then, some time had passed but just last night, my son Freddy who recently inherited that same TV from me, tried to turn it on and strangely it wouldn’t work. I laughed with him, saying, “Don’t worry, I’ll ask Pete – he’ll know what to do.” Hours later, I got the message from his daughter Shoneen that Pete had passed. The timing broke me. It reminded me again of the kindness he showed me, and how much he meant to my life.
Pete loved Ludus. He may not have been the fittest, fastest, or strongest in class - but he epitomised what it means to be a true modern-day gladiator: he gave 100% every session, lifted up those around him, and embodied humility, resilience, and heart. Those are the qualities that can never be measured by reps or scores, but by the impact a man leaves on others.
When we relocated at the end of last year, Pete drifted from the gym like some members did, but he still reached out to me. We even sat for coffee not long ago – I didn’t know it would be the last time I’d see him. Through all the struggles and challenges I’ve faced running Ludus, it’s people like Pete who make it worthwhile. His smile, his banter, his loyalty – I’ll never forget them.
Pete, I love you, brother. We will never forget you. You will always be part of our Ludus family.
I also want to honour his daughter, Shoneen, who he loved immensely and who has also been part of Ludus. Shoneen, we are here for you, always.
Rest easy, Pete. You lived like a gladiator and loved like a giant.
