What an exciting day at the Cromwell Global Taekwon-Do open Championship in Cromwell yesterday. Miss Phoebe Briggs placed 2nd in sparring and 3rd in special technique, and Mr Ryan Clearwater placed 1st in sparring, 1st in special technique & 3rd in patterns. A huge thank you to Kmans Martial Arts Club for organising the outstanding event.

A New Grand Master for New Zealand
A very special congratulations to Grand Master Mahesh Bhana on his promotion to 9th Degree.

Following an interview with the Grand Master Promotion Committee, the final part of a lengthy promotion process, Grand Master Marano has officially announced this auspicious promotion.

Grand Master Bhana is one of New Zealand’s most active senior instructors, specialising in senior Dan training and specialist sessions for students preparing for Black Belt gradings. He is also an exceptional organiser of international events, including the upcoming International Instructor Course (IIC) in March 2027, for which he is the organiser. He is widely respected by senior ITF officials for his professionalism, knowledge and expertise in organising and delivering major international events.

ITFNZ warmly congratulates Grand Master Bhana on this outstanding achievement and looks forward to the presentation of his 9th Degree certificate in due course.

We had a special visitor this week. Miss Mya Boyd dropped by inspiring the next generation of up and coming black belts. Miss Boyd is currently completing an Early Childhood Education degree at Canterbury University. Always great to see our former club members when in town.

On Friday 22nd May, we had three of our youngest students travel to the Otago University Club in Dunedin, for their first ever national grading. The examiner, Master Hayden Breese VII dan put them through their paces in front of fellow students, family and friends. All three candidates achieved 'A' passes to 9th gup (grade). Their secret weapon - the large family support that came to cheer them on, in most cases travelling some 2 1/2 to 3 hours to be there. We are very proud of them all!!

It was great to have a visit by the Alexandra Venturer Unit on Monday night. Instead of the usual demonstration, we had our visitors have a go at releases from wrist grabs, trying some kicks, participating in parts of a pattern and some pad work. Great job by all the venturers!!

ANZAC Day 2026, two of our members participated in the Alexandra commemoration ceremony. Ryan Clearwater paraded as a member of the Alexandra Rural Fire Brigade and Miss Phoebe Briggs assisted Senior Firefighter Jason McDonough in the wreath laying ceremony. We are very proud of both of them

On March 1st the Alexandra Instructor Mark Davies and Mr Dion Bennett (Mosgiel Club) sat and passed their 4th dan in Auckland. The examiners for the grading were Grandmasters Davidson (left) and McPhail (right). Both clubs are extremely proud of their instructors. The grading in Auckland was the culmination of 6 months of hard work, monthly fitness testing and being able to perform on the day. To add some perspective to this achievement, ITKD has only twenty six active 4th dans throughout NZ. Congratulations.
