MEET THE TEAM - Kuran Ireland - Head Guide

Seems we’re doing team bios, and Alice suggested there would be more on me later….here we go 😅

I’m Kuran, I’ve been a hunter my whole life, learnt my foundation from my dad, like he did from his.

Hunting has always been a passion, but for the majority of my life, it’s been my way of life. It’s been a job, a business, a reason to meet people, a reason to travel fun, challenging and even risky.

Largely hunting has made up a large portion of who I am today.

One aspect of hunting that has always been with me is to ensure people understand what it means to be a hunter, and to ensure they are given the skill, knowledge and genuine confidence to really embark on a hunting journey.

I enjoy teaching new hunters through the Mt Campbell Hunting Club because it’s unique.

Unique in it varies as much as the people themselves. I enjoy starting the workshop meeting new faces and building the content direction from there. This allows us to ensure those joining get what they need, not someone else’s version of what hunting is or should be.

Anyways, enough rambling about me, we’d be better to meet in person at one of our learn to hunt courses. Just saying…. 🤷 👌

Note from Alice - Kuran is also incredibly humble, he is our head guide because he is the best teacher in the game. His experience, knowledge and easy going, calm personalty equip him with a unique way of teaching that you just don’t find anywhere (I should know, he taught me to hunt!) We are incredibly lucky to have him as part of our team.

So here it is, our next Ladies Only Learn to Hunt dates have been set for 19-20 September.
These have sold out everytime we have run them and I suspect this one won’t be any different!

From the very basics of hunting, the why, the how, the what right through to an actual hunt. This course has it all!

A two day workshop all inclusive which is designed to give you the opportunity to learn from scratch as a complete beginner and gives you the real skills and experience on the hill actively hunting feral free range animals.

We keep it nice and small so it’s not overwhelming and every student has the opportunity to ask questions, have a go at all the skills and goes on their own hunt with their own guide on the second day with the view of hopefully being able to have an oppurtunity to take an animal.

On top of that, our guides are the best in their fields, true teachers who really just want to pass their passion on in a safe, supportive environment.

We believe it’s the best way to learn and man do we love getting on the hill with you all.

Are you keen?! Get in touch now before this workshop sells out as well 🦌 👀 🏔️ 🩷

MEET THE TEAM - First up our founder and chief lolly cake maker Alice Sanders (aka me 😅)

It’s a bit weird talking about myself but here we are. I am a farmers daughter who grew up to become a lawyer/farmer/hunter. I learned to hunt later in life and promptly fell in love with it.

I had a really positive experience learning to hunt through Kuran (more on him later) and other people I met along the way but what I quickly realised is that a lot of people don’t have that positive experience learning to hunt or were too scared to put themselves out there to try learn.

Just because somebody hunts doesn’t mean they are a great teacher and often I would hear stories of “I went hunting and I guess I shot a deer but I just followed everyone else, no idea how we found the deer, then I lay down in front of a set up rifle, pulled the trigger and then they gutted it, carried it and I followed along” or worse “I felt pressured to take the shot, it was awful I’d never do it again. I didn’t feel safe” or “I don’t even know where to start or who to ask”.

I hated that story so I decided I wanted to change it, I had the safe environment, the access to key people and most importantly the knowledge of what it feels like to be a beginner, to ask the silly questions and to be nervous. And so MCHC was born.

Initially we ran general Learn to Hunts and meat hunts and now we have added Ladies Only Learn to Hunts and honestly it has been the best kind of ride. We have met epic people, seen so many firsts and heard the most amazing stories on our journey.

I’m so passionate about hunting and connection and nature and snacks and MCHC allows all that to come together in a super fun, supportive environment. There’s no such thing as a dumb question and the lolly cake is truly legendary.

For me there’s no feeling like being on the hill away from the world, the constant notifications and screens and just concentrating on what’s right in front of you. It’s truly my favourite place 🌍 ✨💛

The story of this hunt started almost four years ago. Not long after we started MCHC we did a giveaway for a meat hunt for a deserving family.

Octavier received a number of nominations however over the last three years he has had a number of obstacles, he was on crutches, then a wheelchair then back to his feet just to break his foot! This coupled with scheduling meant we only just got on the hill this weekend.

We had an epic day on the hill and it was a real hunt, a couple of failed stalks and then this boy presented himself. It was not an easy shot but Occy pulled it off.

Then Occy said something so beautiful “it all worked out coz this buck has been a bit broken and so am I so he’s been waiting for me and I’ve been waiting for him” 🥹💛

And if that doesn’t sum up hunting, I don’t know what does. It all happens the way it’s meant to, you just have to be patient 👌

There’s not a day on the hill where we don’t learn something and this one was a pretty special one 🦌 🏔️ ✨

Summer is a great time to pick up some barbecue meat but there is a bit of an art to animal selection this time of year! 👀 🦌 🧐

We close down from late October to mid January every year and part of this is due to the hinds and does fawning (having babies).

During this period, stags are also growing their antlers back and are “in velvet” which refers to the period while their antlers are soft and not fully formed. It can be very hard to tell how good a stag will be during this period and generally you can’t save the antlers and mount the animal if it is in velvet and soft (*subject to exceptions).

It can be an ethical decision as to what animal you may take this time of year, often yearlings are a good target species but there are other options and these decisions are something we cover in detail in both our Learn to Hunt and on the hill during meat hunts.

Knowing the life cycles and seasons of the animals you hunt is important to know, it helps you make informed decisions on the hill but also achieve your goals whether they are trophy related or meat related.

Surprisingly even stags can be delicious eating if you choose the right time of year 🤯

We love sharing our knowledge and come January we will back on the hill and doing what we love. Teaching you to hunt and eating snacks while doing it 💅🏻 🦌 🏔️ 🍫

This was one of my favourite hunts this year (so far!).
Jade and her Dad booked in to come for a meat hunt. Jade was pretty keen to fill the freezer and hadn’t shot a rifle since she was young so she decided that Dad would take an animal, which he did.
But what was super cool was after a morning on the hill where we hunted, her Dad had a number of stalks and we chatted through everything we did, Jade was keen to have a go herself.
Just in the simple act of being out and feeling comfortable to ask questions and having some chats about things we saw on the hill took the initial nervousness away.
So with Dad watching below, we stalked in on a deer that moved away, then knowing that there were also goats around, we glassed above us to see a fallow doe. Some strategic stalking due to wind and long shadows (which make you twice as tall to a deer) and we were in position.
The rest wasn’t great but we made do and got Jade solid and then deep breathe, another deer stands up right in front of the first one, Jade still keeps her cool and takes her first animal cleanly. All while Dad watched below 💅🏻
We honestly couldn’t have been more excited and stoked for Jade. It was a true testament to what can happen when you give things a little time 🦌 🏔️
While this was a meat hunt, this is also the exact feeling we replicate in our Learn to Hunts, knowledge, time, safety and some good chats.
