The Bias Buddha’s Bitch Episode 3: Compassion, The Bystander Effect, The Colosseum Effect & Oculogyric crisis… 👀 🔫💪

I explore the intersection of compassion, psychology, and collective human behaviour.
I dive into Paul Gilbert’s Compassion Focused Theory and the concepts of our evolved compassion, how environments shape compassion, or a lack of compassion as well as emotional intellect. Asking what happens when compassion is absent—not just within individuals, but within groups.
I also discuss the bystander effect and introduce what I perceive as the Colosseum Effect: the disturbing psychological phenomenon in which groups of people become entertained by another person’s suffering, humiliation, or abuse, and may even participate in it. Why do crowds sometimes watch, laugh, encourage, or remain passive in the face of cruelty? What psychological mechanisms make this possible?
Along the way, I humorously share my experience of oculogyric crisis, the neurological phenomenon that can cause dramatic eye seizures, and share some personal updates, observations, and a few lighter moments to balance the heavier topics.
This episode is a journey through compassion, conformity, cruelty, and consciousness—with the usual mix of psychology, curiosity, humour, and unapologetic questioning.
If you’ve ever wondered why some people help, why others watch, and why some laugh… and what compassion really requires of us, this conversation is for you.

So many things have come flying at my face this past 1-2 weeks. I’ve been so nonchalant to it all just skipping along happy go lucky, not bothered at all… It’s your problem… 🍀 👌

Then it all really started to hit me. How many people had thrown shade at me in the space of a week. How I might have upset another person my being dismissive of their needs, somebody that I truly cared for.

I woke up from a nightmare about all of this melodrama and jumped up to reach for my note pad…. LISTS!!! Always help… Sometimes we actually do need to check ourselves and go back to the drawing board.

Messing up, speaking out of turn, tripping up, putting our foot in it… ‘OH NO LOOK YOU’RE A HUMAN!’ 🧘🏼‍♀️🥷

Last night everything hit me all at once, complete catastrophe; my entire country betrayed me, I have no home, I’ll never be able to go home, my family, my community, the police, the NHS, social services… They destroyed my life and soooo many people joined in for the entertainment… ‘The colloseum effect.’

I was literally screaming, I could have screamed louder but I actually had a class to teach. So I picked myself up off the ground, wiped the snot from my nose, washed my face and taught that class.

A desperate moment with myself occured when I looked in the mirror crying, ‘You have no family, no country, your entire country betrayed you, my reality is melting, why would my entire country do this to me?’

One hour later and I looked at myself in the mirror and said to myself, ‘F**k it, I’m going to make it all the way to the fu***ng top no matter how fu***ng humiliating it is, I DON’T GIVE A F**K!’

Same person - 1 hour’s difference.

Your actions don’t define me,
My mistakes don’t define me,
Your poor judgement doesn’t change things.

When you don’t tell people the label they reveal their true prejudice and self righteousness…

This is something I’ve really noticed this week.

People will treat you poorly, discriminate you, degrade you and belittle you for marginalised qualities and neurological divergences without a second thought.

As if you should take everyone aside to inform them of your personal daily struggles in order to prevent any form of discrimination, or hateful treatment.

People don’t have a right to know about your private battles, whether that’s neurological, psychological, or physical.

People are quick to protect their self image if the persons differences are visibly noticeable; skin colour, race, religion because it makes them look good in public not to discriminate or have negative, or hateful feelings towards such individuals.

People show who they are by the way they treat people who’s differences are NOT visible!
