Cycling south India - part 2 🌴 coconut paradise, the biggest and most impressive trees ever seen, incredible nature with apparently a lot of wildlife (But all we’ve seen was this weird pink elephant on a bicycle). It was simply beautiful, a pleasure to cycle small roads between Vellore and Mysore 🚴

Cycling south India 🇮🇳

The route we’ve cycled in South India, between Vellore and Mysore, was more than beautiful. It was an exploration of small roads, going through stunning little villages, crossing countless beautiful smiles. Cruising through such different special landscapes I never saw before. But it was mainly discovery, and learning. What is the difference between the brown hairy coco and the green/orange ones? We didn’t know, to be honest we thought it was another variety 🫣 How is silk produced? We knew it came from a worm but how? We discovered it on the go. People are doing their small businesses in those small villages, showing and sharing their work proudly! Our curiosity made them happy. But their curiosity is also interesting, their surprised faces when they see us pass with those big bicycles is beautiful to observe. What questions do they ask themselves ? A mystery that is nice to stay unrevealed sometimes. What also was mysterious to us, and remains like that, are all the rituals of that rich culture full of colours, flowers and sounds 🌸

Taking the bicycles on the train in India. A first time, everything went suspiciously smooth. The second time, a bit less.. When we arrived at the train station in South India, we couldn’t see our bicycles at all in the overloaded carrier. Nothing could be removed from there. So the train left, with our bicycles? We didn’t really know.

We had to wait for the train to arrive at the end destination (about 16h further), to know if they actually were still alive and there. They were! That was a first relief. But then, we still had to make sure they would be properly loaded on another train back. It took over 48hours in total, to finally get our bicycles back. 48 hours where we couldn’t go very far, all our stuff are definitely unmovable without our wheels to carry it.

The lesson in this experience: we probably make problems a little big sometimes, compared to other Indian passengers with same problems. They are probably more used to it. Is it bad ? If we weren’t there to push the parcel staff to solve the problem efficiently, the bicycles would probably have arrived 4 days later. Also, sleeping in a railway station is more than normal there. We were just one of all those people. But, once again, even when we are living like homeless, we still have this luxury and privilege for it to be a « choice » and to have a « roof » even though it is only a tent. Tent’s are luxury as well.

Nepal, the place where it was time to do something else. Time to enjoy the culture differently, to see the mountains from closeby, to walk instead of pedal.

A place to share beautiful moments with our family and friends from home, but also to make new people our family out there! We discovered a nature like no other, but we mainly discovered a culture. And an incredible scene of artists and passionate people in all kind of ways 💜

It was beautiful, it was fun, it was creative, and then it was time to continue again towards new horizons. Because secretly it has been a long time that we do know that another destination would lay ahead. Just a little bit south there are some waves waiting for us to be catched 🌴🏄🏽‍♀️

When we left Belgium 14 months ago, we never imagined we would cross China 🇧🇪➡️🇨🇳
But very early in this journey, we learned something powerful: when you travel long distances, you never really know how you’ll reach your final destination.

When continuing through Iran became impossible, China turned into our only route to reach Tibet. We didn’t know much about the country — only that it’s massive… and that karaoke is serious business 🎤😄

What we discovered went far beyond that.

China surprised us with a culture completely different from what we had imagined 🤯
And with people who are genuinely kind, open, and filled with positive energy ❤️✨

In China, public parks are true places of expression 🌳
The moment you step into one, you lose track of time.
You might end up dancing 💃🕺
Singing karaoke 🎶
Getting a massage 💆
Watching an open-air movie 🎬
Or stumbling upon something totally unexpected.
The parks are alive — full of movement, joy, and connection.
China is funky. It feels like another world… and a beautiful one 🌈

We also rediscovered food in China 🥢🥬
Throughout this entire journey, we’ve been cooking most of our meals — partly because it’s budget-friendly 💰, but also because finding vegetarian food isn’t always easy 🌱
China changed that completely.
The variety of vegetarian options amazed us.
We couldn’t stop exploring, tasting, and eating 🤤
Food became part of the adventure again.

In the end, China felt like a Pandora’s box 🎁
We stepped in without expectations…
And day after day, it kept surprising us, inspiring us, and leaving us amazed ✨

So how did we suddenly get teleported from north china, urumqi, to our destination, which was Nepal?

As you might know, our plan was to cycle all the way from our hometown, Belgium, to Nepal. Our goal was to do it all by bicycle, on humanpower only. But soon, the reality of geopolitical situations came along the way. In certain regions of the world, things are just uncertain. It started with the sudden war in Iran, followed by the only 3 days transit visa to cross 700km in Russia, and a closed border between Kazakstan and Uzbekistan.

But one other big obstacle came along the way pretty early in the journey: the conflict between India and Pakistan, closing the only remaining land border we were supposed to cross to reach Nepal. Since, we hoped this border would eventually open again in the months to come, which didn’t happen. The only other option to arrive at our destination by land was through China and Tibet. BUT: China is huge and Tibet is a very restricted part under Chinese control.

So, we cycled the furthest we could during the 1month of free visa in China. The city we reached thus became URUMQI, with about 15.000km on our counters.

Cycling through Tibet (from Lhasa to the border) COULD have been an option, but requires guide, travel permits, a van carrying the stuff and supplies. Budgetwise that would’ve cost us more than one year of travel. So, we choose the option to organise a 4 day tour with bus and 4 other fellow cyclists to cross Tibet and be dropped at the border of our long desired land border: Nepal!

So despite 2 small parts (one through Russia and one to cross the border from kazakstan to uzbekistan) we managed to cycle it all until Urumqi, in North-west China, Xinjiang.

We are happy and satisfied of the choices we made, of the route we’ve cycled, of the countries we’ve crossed. 🚴‍♀️💜

Duku highway - China 🇨🇳

About 800 km cycled in China, with on the road a mythical highway we didn’t know about. But apparently it’s a bucket list one for the chinese population. The road to get there was wonderful, getting higher and higher into the chinese nature, surrounded by pines, rivers and the further we got the more snowy peak were appearing as well. One sad fact about this nature is that it is not accessible to the people. Literally every single meter of road is lined with barb wire to prevent the access. This made camping complicated as well, but doable. We’ve got surprised by the snow, which was heavy rain transformed into a snow layer when we woke up. Because of this the pass was closed.. but this gave us a pretty unique experience of a camping night on the parking with Chinese travelers sleeping in their vans and cars, bringing (of course) their karaoke system to the 2600m parking! We almost had to turn all the way back to Yining (300km) because the pass was not about to open and we had to be in time in Urumqi, but luckily it ended up opening that same day. I guess we’ve never been that happy to climb a mountain. It was the last one before arriving in Nepal, and not the least. With it’s 3450m it’s a first fully snowy pass. Just STUNNING 🤩

Little photo recap of KYRGYZSTAN 🇰🇬

A country that started with the highest border (4280m), and the brightest and most powerful colours we have seen in the nature so far. The end of the Pamir brought us to the magical highlands surrounded by white mountain peaks where just a bunch of horses and jacks are wandering around in between the smoking yurts. It started with the pure imagine of what one can imagine of Kyrgyzstan.

The second part of the country offered us just as much incredible sceneries with turquoise flowing rivers, graveyards looking like little tempel towns, a lake that felt like a sea, and more horses.. it was the 19th country on our road, one where we didn’t spend a lot of time, but enough to enjoy it’s beautiful nature 😍

Pamir highway part 3 - M41 !

After our beautiful adventure in the remote areas of the Shakhdara valley, it was time for us to join the one and only real pamir highway/ M41. We had some apprehension about riding on this one, but the section we did was absolutely stunning. We have been cruising around 4000m altitude for quite a while. It felt like being in another world up there where time stops and sceneries just keep surprising you. Colours we didn’t know that could exist in nature, yurts and people living in the most remote places, landscapes where you ask yourself whether you are on the moon, on mars or on venus? No words neither fotos can truly represent the wonders of these places ! Grateful we had to chance to be there 🙏🏼

Uzbekistan 🇺🇿

The land of the most incredible ancient architecture I’ve seen in my life. It’s just like stepping in a time machine and being thrown into the ancient silk road times. Everything is so beautifully preserved. But it’s also the land of the unforgiving desert and heat. We have crossed it in the hottest month of the year. Cycling through desert in 50-60 degrees! But this was also the country of challenge for us, cycling a record of 333km. We learned that when we have to do it, we can do it! Going so fast and being tired as well made it difficult in the beginning to connect to the culture. But the last days definitely changed this. We have been lucky to be invited at a party in a beautiful big family which immersed us fully into the beautiful culture of Uzbekistan.

A country of diverse experiences. A country that pleases the eyes. A country we leave with satisfaction of what we had the chance to live 🫶🏻
