IN-DEPTH STORY
Four Nepali para swimmers; Srijana Sarki, Jenisha Kathayat, Harkaman Gharti and Member Singi Syangbo, are preparing for upcoming international competition despite limited training facilities and financial support.
Training under coach Subas Shrestha, the athletes face challenges including a lack of accessible pools, physiotherapy, recovery facilities, nutrition, equipment and transport. Still, all four are aiming to make a strong international impact.
For Srijana, it will be her first international competition, while Jenisha hopes to improve on her previous experience. Harkaman, who lost both hands in an electric shock, is targeting future Olympic and World Championship qualification. Member Singi, who lost a leg in a road accident, has his sights set on winning a medal.
Nepal has won only one medal at the Para Asian Games so far; a bronze by taekwondo athlete Palesha Goverdhan in 2023. The para swimming team now hopes to add a new chapter to Nepal’s medal history.
